Diesel Cooking ! ?

Post by johnfrombrum »

I've been doing some research prior to buying and fitting out a vehicle (a Hilux of course) and shipping it from the UK to Namibia for a couple of months bimbling around.

As a supplement to the campfire / braai, I'd been looking at alternates : gas (is OK so long as you can still get the cylinders filled) and petrol stoves are fine apart from the smell & danger of flash fires.

What you would you recommend ?

I came across these diesel powered cooking rings that may solve the problem = http://www.peachment.co.uk/product.asp?id=384&cid=122" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hi John and welcome. :thumbup:

Most of the time there's enough dead-fall firewood laying about for camp fires and cooking / heating purposes. When not, the gas bottles come in handy and last pretty well and seldom need re-filling on a trip depending on how long you're in the styx. Dual battery systems assisted with solar power and inverters allows you to boil a kettle, run your laptop etc., etc.

And then there's the paraffin option as well ... not sure that the diesel cookers would even be considered. ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

I too have one of those kettles - a great invention. I set it all up before I go to bed and when I wake up I reach out of the tent and light it. By the time I emerge, the hot water is ready for the first cup of tea.

On my last trip around southern Africa I relied on gas and wood. However, I hired a Landy in Kenya last year and found wood hard to find - especially when entering the Massai Mara to spend a week there.

Good to know. if wood and gas is a problem than I would look at something like a Primus stove
