Help asb! Where do I buy this???

Post by grobbepj »

Can anybody tell me where can I buy what is called a continuous duty solenoid (see pic). I want to use it to isolate power to the back of my bakkie when the ignition is switched off and have the power available to the firsge when the ignition is on and motor running.
I dont have a second/dual battery so the national luna one wont work as it needs to sense the second battery as I am told.

I just cant find these buggers other than on ebay etc... And need it soon. You get them in different amp ratings and apparently they are used in golf carts...

Most spares shops should keep, otherwise Diesel Electric or Allmans. ;-)

I was at numerous spare shops and they all just stare at me blankly... Maybe just my area. Will try a diesel electric outlet. Thanks

Dammit want hy pas so lekker daar)

It's a Solenoid, not a relay. careful of those Midas ones, they are cheap imitations of the original C-H Solenoid. I bought one a while ago and it locked, it would not release when the source voltage was removed. Diesel Electric should definitely have the correct part for you.

But I can't help wondering why a normal Hella spotlight relay will not do the job for you? It's only for a fridge, or did I miss something?

Thanks FD. your right for now its only for the fridge but the previuos owner had the whole dual battery setup so all the wiring is already done up to a brad harrison plug (without a solenoid). So the idea is to just split the existing power cable without doing additional wiring and then also be sorted when the funds are there for a dual battery system (and the justification I cant find now). Will be overkill for the current problem or requirement but hopefully part of a larger plan.

Dankie. Jy is net so bietjie ver van my af.

Needs to be rated for continuous use. The Cole-Hershey is ideal for this - has a heavy coil inside that doesn't get hot with continued use. Maybe try yours for a while and see but keep an eye on it, if it's inadequate it will stop working - either burn out the coil or the contacts. If the contacts burn together, you will have full time connection, so that's why I say keep an eye on it (it will stop clicking when you power up). ;-)
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks!! I have the continuous rated cole hershey in now. Rated for 85A continuous and 700A intermittent. I k ow the alternator might exceed 85A but surely not all the time??
Is the worst that can happen a messed up solenoid?? Then I might as well give it a shot and drive with it and see what happens...

Pieter, ja, the worst that can happen is a buggered solenoid, but if it's the Cole Hershey it'll be fine. Your 2nd battery will never draw anywhere near 85A, even with the fridge / freezer going and charging the battery. It would be normal for the solenoid to warm up a bit with continued use, so as George said, don't worry.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
