ford 4speed box

Post by pampoen »

Does anyone know how a ford v6 bullet gearbox will take the strain of a 350 chev v8?

Idont think the gearbox wil last.I broke one in my cortina bakkie.I'll rather go for a cressida 5speed gearbox.

It is a strong box,but it depends if you going to tow something like a caravan.but for normal driving it should be fine.Im not an expert on this ,but had two in my vehicles and no problems. Also heard of some people that used it on a v8 and it last.

If you want to go manual get yourself a borg warner T5 gearbox (speak to the guys at Gearmax) or else go for a v8 Autobox.

Neither the Cressida nor the Ford g/b will last if you plan on doing any kind of serious 4x4-ing. Especially not if you start putting on big wheels. Go the T5 g/b route as Bennie suggested. :D

Luke, I spoke to guy at the V8 Shoppe in Alberton. He recons the cheapest way to get a Chevy V8 is to buy a "cut out". They sell them for about R 7500 (they guarante that it's rebuildable) and he recons you spend the same on it to have a nice reliable motor. They should have stock again later this month or in April.

I agree with Bennie, Luke. Remember, an X5 is not built for offroading and a 'Lux is not built for dicing. It's going to take lots and lots of money to upgrade every single drivetrain component to take the strain of a maxed V8. And my personal experience is that the guy in the M3 or X5 is going to think you're a wannabee and so is all the other people on the road - even if you outdrag them! :x The guy driving the Porche doesn't care if the Golf outdrags him - he's still going home with the chick! I'm thinking of a V8 myself, but not for dicing. It's purely so I can keep doing 120 on the open road and have the power to climb the obsticles.

Don't go over the top, but rather stick to what all 'Luxes were made for. Remember, offroad the X5 is the "wannabee"...

I think even my Hilux with the 1800 (2Y) engine in will give an X5 Gas in real offroad scenarios, but on a drag type dice a V8 supped up enough to catch it will be so overpowered it will rip a lux apart, but a nice 7MGTE will do a very an excellent job as a street racer. Ask Ewald, he will tell you, that thing is so fast it is scary.

Scorpion

I am with you, long past the dicing stage but I see Like is still young and at that age testosterone levels are higher then good sense.

Luke do not worry we all were itching at one stage, nothing wrong with it, at least when you get older you will have something to look back upon. Stuff good sense fit whatever gives you a hardy and enjoy it while you do not have much other worries. If you want too much power offroad to rally around like a madman then fit the V8 or if you want to have a street dice then fit a turbo engine and some gas if you are really serious. Just make sure you upgrade the brakes as well or fit a parachute at the back

Luke, I'm investigating a Chevy 350 at the moment. Like I said I don't want a firebreather, I'm just looking for a unstrained, reliable and torquey motor. I have to choose between the V8 and a 7M-GE Supra motor. At this stage it looks like the V8 won't be much more expensive initially, but I'm worried about the drivetrain components. The 3 liter Supra motor should make about 140kW, while the V8 would be over 200kW, so you can see why I'm concerned. My 2.2 4Y probably makes 60kW, so more than tripling te power will have consequences... :x :x

MMM I think all this X5 stuff has got my head spinning  I have to work with these things all day really dont want to talk about them on the HILUX forum. However I think the point here is that a HILUX is a OFFROAD vechile with some on road capability and a X5 is a onroad vechile with some off road capability (limited but Surprising).

Some facts about the current X5

3.0si Top Speed 210km/h governed with 200kW and 315Nm of torque 0-100 is 8.1 seconds fuel consumption 10.9 l/100km
3.0sd Top Speed 235km/h governed with 200kW and 565Nm of torque 0-100 is 7 seconds fuel consumption is 8.2l/100km
4.8i Top Speed is 240km/h governed with 261kW and 475Nm od torgue 0-100 is 6.5 seconds fuel consumption is 12.5l/100km

So it is clear unless you have a really serious motor under the bonnet of the Lux even the smallest X5 will piepie on you on the tar :( and even if you do have serious power like SupraLuxBul's 7MGTE you end up with the fact that driving over 140km/h is like dancing with the devil  due to lack of handling and stopping power! Though I could think of nothing better then pulling up next to my MD with my van and making his name mud with a 18 year old Hilux

Now wouldnt THAT be a sweet motor to put in a Lux? I know that motor is VERY smooth and powerful. I have one in my 130i..

I thought I would fit a 328i motor at 154kW however getting a bell housing addapter is going to be a problem and then at the end of the day it will not be a toyota anymore :(

Whatever upgrade engine you decide on, you will have to also consider upgrading your propshafts if you want to out perform a BM. Have you considered the fitment of a Colt Rodea 3 Liter engine V 6, with these engines you can even go futher and fit a Voltex 2 Super Charger, free flow exhaust, inter cooler and piggy back chip, once fitted you should get round about 228 kilo watts at the flywheel.
An auto box and special adapter plate, otherwise throw out the Hilux transfer case and fit a single comp-lete trasnsfer case maybe from a Tracker or Safari.

However whatever engine replacement you do, you will have to have mega $$$$$$ available otherwise you will not complete this project correctly.

You must do your home work as well and make sure that your diff ratio's are correct for the engine up grade and output, you must remember that not all Hilux's have the same diff ratio's.

4.55
4.29

Yea sheesh man   im not made of money and besides its either Toy,Chev,or the Ford v6 or v8.But yea im trying to work things out to keep things simple.Going the Auto way means fitting an oil cooler and the lack of ratios is gonna be hard for off roading but who wants to go slow off road hey  ......especially with a v8.It will mean just an adaptor plate though as well as and if i go auto it should keep my origional proppies and diff intact a little longer, anyway ill see,the time is coming apon me to de rust my baby so i might spend a little on that and maybe a suB and an amp after that.

Depending on how you drive. If you treat them well they should be strong enough but for serious off roading I would recommend lockers because if one wheel is spinning and suddenly gains grip you are going to twist and eventually break it. This will also happen with smaller engines but with the power of the 8 it may just happen so much faster.

Also an auto box would put less strain then a manual on the axles...

Howzit, Luke. The search is on hold for a bit, as I'm in Germany at the moment, but will continue once I'm back. I've found a guy in Krugersdorp that has done quite a few V8 conversions (Chevy and Lexus) to Hiluxes, but I haven't managed to speak to him yet. I'll let you know what he says when I'm back next week.
