Fuel consumption '89 2.2 petrol sfa lux
Howsit Modifiers
Please excuse me if I am doing this wrong ,as I am a newbie ,with this being my first post.
I am the proud new owner of a 1989 2.2 Petrol SFA Hilux 4x4 - wow what a vehicle!
My only worry (besides theft) at this stage is the fuel consumption. Please correct me if I am wrong
but the van has the standard small tank -either 50l or 65l ,and is giving me 260km out of a full tank.
What conversions are available to improve this figure?
Thank you
Ryan

Re: Fuel consumption '89 2.2 petrol sfa lux
nope ryan, there something amiss there.
the 2.2 is very thirsty by nature, by you seem to have an alcoholic there.
normal heavy load for me was 6.5km / lt.
family scenic drive on N1 saw me getting close to 9km / l, and I had the import engine which apparently is even thirstier

Re: Fuel consumption '89 2.2 petrol sfa lux
Definitely something amiss there .... you should be getting a lot better than that!
Start with the float level ... it should sit exactly centre of the sight glass on the front side of the carb when the vehicle is standing level. Check the needle and seat as well. Not sure any more what the standard jet sizes are, but look at that too. Then make sure that the auto choke is fully opening when the motor is warm. Also check that all the vacuum pipes are where they are supposed to be. This diagram should help ....
Good luck, hope you find the problem.

Hi Ryan
You did not say how many fuel you use yo fill up your tank with 260 km on the odometer. On my standard 65 liter tank with the petrol gauge needle on empty mark there is still 20 liters left over.My fuel consumption on my 4y EFI avarage between 7.8 and 8.1 k/m per liter at 120/130 km p/h

Re: Fuel consumption '89 2.2 petrol sfa lux
Ryan,
Firstly yes the SFA Double cabs had a 65L fuel tank with a reserve of aprox 20 l when the needle shows empty. SO taken roughly 260 km using +/- 45L of fuel = 5.7 km/l which is really very heavy on juice.
I would like to agree with Andy onthis one, seems like the vehicle is running quite a bit to rich on the carb settings.
Also like Dawie mentioned getting those fuel consumption is achievable with a standard vehicle with EFI fitted. Mine does approx 7.7 km/l all round and drops to about 7km/l in town but I have lifted my vehicle and is also running EFI which is defenitely worthwhile to be done on any 4Y motor.

Hi Ryan,
That's perfectly normal. I get 250km on 45l of juice (vehicle got a 65l tank)
I guy that I know who ownes a '92 model since new, never got more than 265km on 45l in town. (that's when needles hit E mark)

Also, the biggest misleading factor is tyres!!! I'm running 32" tyres, that is 1km/h less than GPS speed.

I am going to disagree with you. That is not normal. You can defenitely get better.I would say 6-6.5km p/l in town would be more accurate with a nikki carb

Re: Fuel consumption '89 2.2 petrol sfa lux
Thanks guys ,being a first timer with these things can be quite daunting!
I will get the carb checked out .
I am based in Durban ,are there any good workshops here that could fit an EFI system
- Also what can I expect to pay for one?
Thanks again!
