Which engine is best?
Hi Guys!
I'm new to this forum, and I want to introduce muself as a huge
fan off Toyota Hilux 4x4's.
We have a verry nice 4x4 track on our farm and people from all over
come to ride on this track, and I'm telling you, Toyota rule!
I have a 1989 Toyota Hilux DC, originally 2.2 but
I had a conversion done and it's riding with a
Ford V6 3l motor now. I am verry impressed with
the power off the bakkie and also with the feul
consumption. It gives me 9.5km/l and it is with
a weber 38D carb.
But I want to ask you guys advise please,
next month I'm going to overall my hole bakkie,
from pannel beating to suspention, engen, interior, everything.
Now what engen do you guys think will be best to put in by bakkie?
If one thinks of power, but also bear in mind feul consumption.
What I thought off was:
1. Overall my engen that is in at the moment
2. Put in a Lexus engen
3. Put in a diesel engen
Your advise will be appretiated!

Re: Wich engen is best?
Hi Eugene
Welcome to the forum and I hope you get the answers you are looking for.
Just a few questions about your dilemma you are facing at the moment:
How long ago have you had the conversion done? Are all the conversion "growing pains" sorted out?
Are you happy with the Ford motor in your Hilux? (fuel consumption/power etc and it being a ford motor after all)
What is wrong with the Ford motor at the moment? How much needs to be overhauled?
The purists on the forum will tell you to revert back to a Toyota motor be it a 4Y/Lexus/7MGE, and there is nothing wrong with that, but in terms of money and hassles overhauling the Ford will be the cheapest and the power from it is very usable. Especially if all the conversion hassles are sorted out. Doing another conversion could be pretty costly and will bring "growing pains" again.
I had a 1990 Hilux with a balanced 3.0 Ford V6 with a mild cam and performance pistons and that motor was sweet with enough usable torque low down and good fuel consumption. I used to get in the region of 6.5 / 7 km/l on the open road depending on the weight of my right foot.
If you are in the market to revert back to a Toyota motor, I suggest you look at the 7MGE conversion.
Good luck

Re: Wich engen is best?
Hi! And thanks for your replies!
Every thing is sorted out on my conversion at the moment and it doesn't
give me hazzles. The only thing that must get sorted out on the
conversion at the moment is the engen mountings, they just don't
seem to last.
I am verry happy with the conversion as it is at the moment
but I just thought that while I'm going to overall my bakkie I
can maybe put in something else that is better, but if
there isn't something that is much better I will keep in
the Ford motor, I had the conversion done 6 years ago.
The only tip I can give guys that want to do the V6 conversion,
is put in a verry strong clutch plate and engen mounting.
I will put up a foto off it now and in +-2months time I will
sow you guys the end result.
Thanks once again.

No problems, if you are happy with the motor dont change it.Gina wrote:The only thing that must get sorted out on the conversion at the moment is the engen mountings, they just don't seem to last.
PM Hoppy on the forum and ask him what engine mountings he used when he built Boggom. They were serious mountings and even though I tried my best I could not break them.

Re: Wich engen is best?
Hi, Eugene! I'm in the same boat as you - my Lux is going in for it's overhaul on Monday. I'm also doing the whole hoot and doing everything that the budget allows. I decided to go for the Lexus V8, but only because I found some one that can make it work and drives one himself!
I don't think I would take on a Lexus conversion, unless you are mechanically extremely well versed and you have a mentor who's done it before. I am a bit of a Toyota purist and would suggest the 7MGE myself, but as Thys said, if you are happy with the Frod, then stick with it. If the budget allows, go for the 7MGE.
M2cw. Anyway, good luck and post some pics!

Re: Wich engen is best?
I managed to convince Blom on this forum to do it for me. He doesn't do it for a living, but he does it for fun and he feels like taking on a project - so I'm very lucky! We decided to run a Microtech system as EMS. It's much more expensive than the local stuff, but it works and it's very reliable. We are going to keep the manual box in the Lux, so no gearbox management. I also don't know which system he runs in Boesman.
Consumption wise I'm not sure. Boesman is a purebred fighting machine, so I don't think Blom keeps figures. I also am not too worried about consumption, but I'm 100% sure it will be better than the 5km/l I currently get on my 4Y! I'll let you know though once I've had the pleasure of testing it.

Johan, as far as I remember, Blom runs the Microtech system in Boesman as well.

doing a conversion is personal taste. Its like going fishing and or hunting..
it is what you desire, should i go offshore angling, what equipment am i going to use etc etc
go hunting, should i go for the overkill, or just photo hunting.
diesel/petrol....
power/economy
being windgat/humble

Re: Which engine is best?
Jip I run Microteck for the motor (The best is normally just good enough)
Gearbox is controlled with a spitronic (the new 2008 model, unfortunately without the speed sensor at the moment, but working on that)
I will NEVER again run any after market engine management on any daily driver except microteck. I have been there and the local ones are just not reliable

Hoe ganit nog met die "albastergatters"?
If the Ford V6 is sorted, leave well well alone.
They are the cheapest horsepower around. Sort the small things out and spend your money on lockers, tyres etc.

Forgive my ignorance, is the the v6 a carb engine? You could always fuel inject it!

Re: Which engine is best?
Hi Johan - nee Dinsdag teruggekom.

Bly maar eerder by Toyota engines.

Vandag my twee Lexus engines met auto bokse bestel. Een vir skud-skud en en vir skud-skud se boetie. Weet nog nie of ek altwee auto gaan maak nie. Bennie - n ware petrolhead aangesien diesels n arm en n been kos.

Re: Which engine is best?
Castos asked:
What is the power output going to be on 2.4 with a efi conversion?
We did a 22R with EFI a few years back, it gave 102kw when tuned for power and 96kw for economy. It had a full Brospeed conversion done.

Plants into an SFA with room for plenty ventilation.
Was eyeing one up yesterday at Commercial, Ex. Japan; 102,000 kms on the clock
I'd really consider buying it IF:
I had a Frontal Lobotomy first.

Only a few more days until Mr EFI comes to visit you..... After that visit I am sure you wont be looking around for a very long time for more power in your Hilux.

In my view it was the best money i could invest in my hilux regarding the performance and economy. I will be doing a drive down the folks in the free state the weekend and then do a proper fuel consumption test. I just love the way it responds when you drive around and yes she starts herself with the aircon on.......no problems
Rich, ask Bennie, Eric and Louis, its just a different vehicle once the conversion is done. Now I have to watch myself not going to fast on any road as it runs at 120 easily on the road, and that is with a lot less input on the "expensive" pedal.....

Re: Which engine is best?
Awesome Johan
looking forward to your feedback after your weekend run
Ps.... When Dyno'd did you go for an Economy Bias Set Up or Performance Bias Set-up
(I'm doing the former)

Re: Which engine is best?
Rich,
I think mine as the brospeed engine with a cam, gasflowed cylinderhead, it was set up to be more performance orientated (compared to a std engine) in order to ensure optimum running at all times.
I picked this up when we did the tuning of the carb of mine vs a freinds std one.
I had to change the jet sizes in the carb from 155 main jet to a 180 size to get it not to run lean when driven with eager right foot..... Consumption I was able to better my friends vehicle by approx 0.5 km/l at the same speed.... after tuning it.
So with it being the "performance" engine i think that Schalk did set it up to what the best is for the engine and not really try look for a specific economy of performance setting.
I will let you know what the weekend's running comes to. I think even Bennie is waiting for me to go Home to test the vehicle on the long road.....
