Wuppetal in a day.

Post by ThysdJ »

Me again. We did this spur-of-the-moment day trip yesterday, Brackenfell to Wuppertal and back. It's NUTS I know, a long trip to fit into one day, but we did it anyway.

We left Brackenfell at about 7am and our first stop was in Ceres. Breakfast time at the Wimpy. We are on first name terms with the staff by now, we go there so often... :P

From Ceres we went up the Gydo Pass where the tyre marks from the last King of the Mountain race day can still be seen. From the top of the pass we took a picture of the Ceres Valley.

Image

At Op-Die-Berg we turned right towards the Cederberg National Park. After a few km's the road turns to gravel and we are right in the mountains. This is beautiful country!!

Image

Image

We drove on this road until we got to the Cederberg Oasis. It was getting hot, and we stopped for a cooldrink. Gerhard (the owner) made us feel VERY welcome and wanted us to stay for a couple of days.. have a few beers... maybe even a braai... And to bring the dogs along next time... :D  Next time Gerhard, we promise.

Image

Kaspaas is a very nice vehicle, but damn!!  I never had the air-con fixed like I was meaning to do since I bought him in June.  It was getting hotter and hotter, and we were suffering big time. A thermometer inside the car showed 45 degrees C at one stage. The road was quite bumpy by now, as we were on our way top Matjiesrivier and Eselbank. It was really really hot, but the scenery made up for it.

At Eselbank we met 2 Lou Ul supporters....
Image

After Eselbank we got to the top of the cement pass and looked down on Wuppertal.
Image

Down the mountain on the cement pass is beautiful. It is quite steep and very narrow, but the surface is solid although a little bumpy. In Wuppertal we drove arount the town and stopped outside the museum to make our own little picnic. The breeze was warm but at least we were in the shade.

Image

After spending about an hour in town, and replenishing our cooldrink and water stocks we set off for Clanwilliam. The heat was almost unbearable by now, but we were still in awe at the scenery around us. Once we got to Clanwilliam, it was tar roads all the way home, and luckily for us there were almost no cars on the road so we made good time from there back to Brackenfell. Home at 18:33 according to the Garmin, and in the pool at 18:33:35, and 2 ice cold drinks later it was 18:33:45......

::: Stats :::
Km's travelled : 526 km
Fuel Consumption: I dont care right now, it's too hot!
Impression : Despite the heat it was BRILLIANT!!!
Lessons Learned : Fix the damn air-con, Winter does not last for ever...

Thys,

Seems you had a great trip! Nice to do this thing on the spur of the moment, but oh yes, you dpo need to get the A/C fixed  Not that it really cools you down or anything, seem the A/C in the SFA's just manages to make the cab that much cooler, as opposed to, for e.g. the 2,7's A/C, which does keep one cool.

Beautiful scenery, glad you enjoyed the trip!

Thys, I think I have heard of them before but where :?: :?: , I always believed that violence is not a solution (thought it only happened in the UK). So that brings me to my next question what is the similarities between the Barmie Army and the lue ulls crowd :?: :?: Both don't know what they are looking at or rememer the rules

Nice Report Thys :!:

Planning the same trip to do in a fortnight, but will be camping at the Pakhuis Pass.

How was the condition of the the jeep track (from Wuppertaal South):?:

Last time I did it (about 2yrs ago), I pulled over at one of the goat stations up there, well chuffed with negotiating the 'infamous 4x4's Only Jeep Track' when a Citi Golf (with Government Plates on) went trundling by :!: :!:

Thanks again for the Report Man :!:

Thanks mate, it's a pleasure. I take it you are talking about the track from Eselbank down to Wuppertal? The roads are in a fair condition, we got a guy with a early 80's Mazda 323 coming up from the front while we were on our way down.

Did you not know that the best 4x4 by FAR is a Citi Golf with Govt Rego Plates? They go everywhere and once they got there they can park wherever they want to too... :D

Enjoy your trip and let us know all about it...

Hi KasPaas,

I did this trip a little while ago, we took our time though, 1 day to go from Brackenfell to Biedouw Valley, via Gydo pass and Eselbank(same route you did), lots of stops, then we stayed at Middel Plaas for 2 days, did a few jeep tracks and swam in the farm dam and some river. We were the support vehicle, the other 2 chaps were on offroad bikes. We came back via Clanwilliam, back into the Cederberg, over Uitkyk pass, back to Matiesriver and passed the National Park again. Long trip but I really enjoyed it...

Once the EFI is done on my 4Y, I'm going to do it again!

Hiya Bretton... Nice to have met you yesterday.. We didnt have our RTT ready for overnighting action yet, so we made it a day trip, but I can imagine that it must be cool to sleep over there in the mountains somewhere.

You must say when your EFI is done, then we do it together.. I believe Niel is also interested. Niel is always interested as long as we take some Sprite Zero's along....

A hired car will never be as good a 4x4 as a GG car. That is a scientifically proven fact.
