Set of Walkie Talkies

Post by Traveler »

I want to "invest" in a set of Walkie Talkies that can be used on the farm, and also between two vehicles when on the road.

I am not yet wanting to invest in the ORRA route (not yet).

There is basically Zartek (ZA-708), Motorola (MTT7B) and Oregon Scientific (TP380PC).

Any specific advice, or experience??

Heinrich, ek weet dis nie wat jy wil hoor nie maar hier is dit in elke geval.
Wat jy wil doen is nie invest nie.....maar jy gaan x2 keer koop.

Koop die VHF radio's en kry klaar.

Wat gaan so VHF my kos??

I got two HYT that lie around . The problem with them is that you have to keep them on charge and when left off charge they discharge.

Guys, the Mine radios that *should* have been available early this year are still in use by the Mine, they keep renewing their Contract on a month-to-month basis.

HYT has brought out a newer improved product and I will no longer be offering the TC1688 radios, rather go for the newer model. These will sell at a slightly higher price than the TC1688, but it is a superior radio than the former. Although also UHF, it does not operate on the same frequencies as the TC1688 so there is no inter-communication between the two.
HYT TC320.jpg

My advice? Spend a bit extra and buy a 5W VHF portable radio, licenced through the Club for the ORRA frequencies.

All VHF/FM radios are line of sight, so you could expect 2-3km on an open road, but about half that when used between two moving vehicles, less than that if there are other vehicles between the two of you. Considerably less when used in a built-up area.

Pricing on the TC320 would be in the region of R600 per each.

The TC1688 is still available, it's just that I think the TC320 gives more bang for the buck. I have sent a PL to directly to your email address, it does not yet reflect the TC320 though.

I used to have Motorola Handicom's which had become very long in the tooth. I decided to replace them and bought the Vratvark which I'm reasonably impressed with. I use them in our warehouse and they work well. There are loads of channels and it also scans if you want. Cost just over a grand each, can't remember exactly.

By the way if you go VHF you will need to buy a license for the year and ICASA will have to allocate you your own frequency. You can use the ORRA frequency but everyone else will hear what you are saying and you will still have to pay the licence fee. The Vratvark has enough channels to enable you to simply us another channel and it is free. Can add subtones in if you desire as well.

Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

On Hi Power (4Watt as opposed to 0.5Watt) I spoke in a built up area to the guy that supplied me the radios and he was about 7Km away.
Craig, I suggest you edit this remark before ICASA becomes interested in this. The ONLY legal limit for a licence-free radio is 500mW, anything else requires an ICASA licence.

Regarding this statement, whatever frequency ICASA allocates to you will be a shared frequency. There is no such thing as a 'private' frequency. Also, the ORRA frequency is licenced for use anywhere within the borders of SA, whereas if you apply for a so-called 'private' frequency, you are only legally entitled to use that frequency within your own geographical confines. Typically, this is 50km radius for a mobile radio and base station, but only 10km or so for portable radios. So ORRA is the solution!

I know nothing about the first quote, don't know where you got it from. You are putting words in my mouth. Trying to frame me!! :silent:

Private Channel: Ok without this getting into a hotly debated topic. I was loosly using the words "private channel". But what I was refering to was like the 29Mhz radios there is a very good chance that there will be other people listening to SWAMBO giving you the what for. However on the UHF radios I bought, because of the loads of channels and the fact that they are not used as widley, the chance of someone being on exactly the same channel as you in the same area as you is so slim that it is as if the radio has a private channel. So because I use the radios for work purposes I don't think the ORRA frquency will be suitable because everyone will get to know when I get ^%# on by SWAMBO. If they are used for the correct purpose i.e. 4x4ing then that is the radios you will want. A point of interest: I know of people getting "arrested" in Zambia because they had SA radios in their vehicles and did not have a Zambian radio licence for them. So what you say about the frequency only being valid in SA people should take not of that. However again the law in Zambia is the same as in SA and the UHF radios using milliwatts as in the case of the Vratvark do not require a licence in that country and can be used freely.

My point is that if a person always goes on club outings and wants a radio to speak to anyone then the ORRA route may be for them, However if you are wanting a couple of radios just to use between you and whoever you are travelling with etc then maybe the UHF option is the way to go. Neither radio is right or wrong, as long as you know the advantages and disadvantages of both before making your choice. I personally do not want a radio to talk to random people and to listen to other peoples conversations. I also don't want a radio to talk much further then a kilometer or two. I have a cell phone that I use for that purpose. The uses I want in a radio is to give them out (I have 3) to other people we are travelling with to arrange pit stops and the like. I really don't enjoy the 10-4, Roger, Copy, Over, Ra Ra Ra stuff. My personal opinion.

All this drivel does not mean my opinion is right though.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.
