Convert old 3.0 99 model hilux to KZTE 3.0 jap import

Post by McCLaw »

Hi All

Its my first post on the forum but I have been lurking here for a few months. :)

I bought a 99 hilux 4x4 from a guy in sasolburg a few months ago.

The car originally had a 3L diesel in.

He relaced it with a 1998 2.8 diesel (DONKEY) engine.

I am in the process of buying a KZ-TE 3L Diesel to swap out the 2.8

Here's my issue.

I'm not sure if the mechanical diesel pump from the 2.8 will work on the kz-te

Also if not, where can I source one that will.

The Jap import KZ-TE is automatic so I also require a flywheel, clutchkit and bell housing that will fit on the original gearbox.

Any help / advise will be greatly appreciated.

Richard, if Maarten have a '99 model it is an IFS. He says it had the 5L engine (normal non turbo 3.0 diesel) and the previous owner replaced that with a 2.8 diesel from SFA, that is if I understood correctly

I eventually got an engine :) :)

Phoned up these guys http://www.enginesandmore.co.za" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; (Great service BTW) Aparrently they also do some work with Fana (Installations or something)

They can do the engine (KZ-TE) with a modified 5L pump and bell housing for R16280 :D so that just leaves me with the exhaust to fiddle with and installing the engine.

Unfortunately it wont be ready in time for next weekends trip so I'll have to patch up the Donkey (2.8) and take the 50Km/h trip LOL

I phoned Fana and he suggested I put a Mazda 2.5 in there.

Dont want to step on any toes here but I dont have much love for mazda

Thank you all for the warm welkom

Eendag waneer ek groot is sal ek ook sulke mooi bakkies besit (Party van die beasts op die forum is awesome!) :D

Maarten,

When it comes to conversion there's 2 very knowledgable guys on the forum, being Fana and Alan Venter(Hoppy)... Alan has done the 2.5TD Mazda conversion quite a few times now... I had the luxury of driving in one Alan did... let me say that I was seriously impressed with the power, drive-ability and cost... the 2.5TD is a bullet proof engine... in fact Alan has done just about every possible engine conversion on a hilux and he rate the 2.5TD the best... when my 2.2 EFi decides it's klaar one day I'll consider the 2.5TD... ag or the Lexus V8 maybe...

Somebody previously commented on enginesandmore , they are the guys who sell the Lexus front cuts where you get the whole front of the car and they can start the engine for you before you buy it.

one question:

If a 5l pump is put on a KZ-TE, that is all well and good but the 5L is NA so there is no boost compensation on the pump.
the KZ will run but surely it wont be as efficient/powerful as it could be.
I'm sure the 3C-T pump has turbo compensation so in my mind that would be a better bet as long as the pump can flow enough juice for the capacity increase (2.2 - 3.0). just m2c worth

As I understand it, the guys modify the 5L with a diaphram (or something to that effect) to enable it to run on the KZ

I'm no mechanic though so perhaps Fana can explain this better LOL ;)

The pump guys do compensate for boost but the kz with that mod is not as strong as the oe one . If you do the fitment yourself it is not so expensive to go V8 LEXUS .
