Hilux for overlanding
I am looking to setup my Hilux for overlanding or travelling. I currently have a Ford V6 in it and although it goes very nicely, it is a bit thirsty - 7km/l. What Toyota diesels can you recommend. It is a 89 4x4 DC.

Re: Hilux for overlanding
Most people go the 2.5tdi ford motor for they are very strong and last quite long.
But they arent that light on fuel you will probably be getting about 9km/l
Another option is the 280dt isuzu motor since you wont need an intercooler but there your problem will be getting an bellhousing to fit you gearbox.
Just my 2c

Hi Rebel where abouts in PE are you? I have the same model and have a canopy ect which I wanna sell so if interested PM me.
7km/l defi not bad at all, thats better then most 4Y's
Diesel engines, you can look at the 3c as I believe they good but pricey.
Just remeber, the ford V6 is a really good engine and easy/cheap to fix should something go wrong and spares are still plentyfull.
Good luck Zane

Re: Hilux for overlanding
7km/l is actually not that bad. With careful driving you can improve it. Those Ford V6 motors are very easy to maintain and they are quite reliable as well. If you are not used to driving a diesel you are going to get helse frustrated with the available Toyota diesels for the SFA models, as they are donkey slow. That said, they are super strong and very reliable...

Hugo I should've listend to that years ago, would've saved me alotAgteros wrote:Don't fix if it ain't broken
Rebel, also consider that if a new motor is to cost you 10K how long/far would you have to drive to make it worth the expense at only a possible 2km/l better?
Use your money to sort more important stuff out like gear for your overlanding.

Point taken. Maybe I must use the v6 while still in good nic. Replace it when I have to. Thank you.

Re: Hilux for overlanding
Does anyone know where I can find a steering wheel and a centre console (between 2 front seats).
