inaccurate fuel gauge

Post by michael01 »

hi all

i seem to be having a prob with my fuel readings, it started when i got the car when it said empty i still had about 30L of petrol in the tank, i've tried to have it sorted out by an auto electric but know when i fill up full the needle only reaches to the 3/4 mark, and empty will lets just say i've still got a lot of driving still before i run out...
so the question is how much of a reserve tank should i have and second how do i adjust the fuel gauge to show a proper reading? oh and if i change the tank to a single long range one would i need to replace the gauge or just adjust it?? thanks again guy

Your tank size is 65ltrs

It shows empty after 45 ltrs

Therefore you have a 20 ltr reserve  :!: (it's a "Hilux Thing")

If you fit a 2nd Hilux tank, side by side with your existing the guage will still operate as usual ie.

if gauge says: half full- then BOTH tanks will be half full

Tanks mounted higher and gravity feeding the existing tank don't allow the saam accuracy of fuel capacity reading. :Geek:

this would explain why I always thought with my first sfa that I actually had a 45 liter tank.
Cause when I filled up on empty , it always use to come to about 45l :wth:

I had my fuel tank out so did a check with the sender unit. Picture shows level of sender unit float in tank when fuel needle is exactly in line with the E stripe on the fuel gauge on my 93 single cab.

Remove the cluster and take the front clear cover off
Connect the plugs back into the cluster
With the tank unit out, connect it up.
Move the float to the full position (to top of travel in your pic)
Ign on and wait for it to go up and stop. (give it a minute or two)
Pull the needle off the cluster carefully
Push it back on in the F position
Drop the float to half and check where it reads

Follow that till it about right and then check over the next while when filling up ect ect ect

Do this at your own risk! Gentle with the needle

An inaccurate fuel guage is one that shows F when the tank is in fact E... The Hilux fuel guage is therefore conservative, not inaccurate...

my guage shows 350km half, then after that drops fast on 500km above E. tank to tank fill 10.2 L/km so means 10 t0 15 litres reserve
