Hey Stu, How did your Argus go.... Was looking out for you at the finish, but not sure what time you got away. It was really, really hot and I believe there were some nasty accidents... Anyway hope you had a good one... Also some very interesting cyclists as there sometimes are... Hear the gay pride crowd were shockers....

Re: PNP Cape Argus Cycle Tour Mar 11th 2012
So where shall I start, was going great guns but the heat and chappies just klapped me, I sought the last piece of shade before top only to be told the race had been stopped anyways....so just shy of 90 KM...but yeah didnt make it to the end, but was still a great ride and day out....I think it peaked at about 41 degrees on chappies so not conducive to giving it some....also the 4 refreshement stops before chappies had run out of water and only had coke and powerade which by this stage I was gatvol of.....
@ Val, sorry I didnt get to say hi LOL....had to then wait for the sweeper bus and only got to the end at 1900 hours...all the bikes piled on to this truck, they were coming off with broken forks, buckled wheels, luckily I had no damage to my Trek.....
Also saw a few epic falls, its really idiots who dont keep the line, keep left if riding slower and overtaking on the right if need be...so you have to have your wits about you.....had a couple of elbow touches myself ........
so heres to next years....as a last note, it took me nearly an hour to get my heart rate down from 160 to 100 and only then about another hour to get it to 80 - thats how hot it was....
But big hats off to the oldest rider of Age 92 who finished in 5 hours 49..........

Nice one George, 8 hours in the saddle, Geez you had a long day, but as you say it comes down to training and I also didnt do enough, no where near it.....but least we made it in one piece.......I hear there was a huge crash in the Womens race also....
But what people dont realise you can hit some serious speeds, I hit 70 the other side of Hospital bend and to hit someone or try to break to avoid a pile is insane.......

Reckon all the cyclists were fortunate they did'nt have the south easter like the day before.. Was in Moullie Point late Saturday afternoon and the wind was chronic, I thought a black south easter. But well done to all who took part in the race..... and I agree with Hoppy... As usual felt sooo sorry for the cyclists that made it to the end and then came in after the cut off time.. There was a group of guys that missed by about 15 seconds.... But supposed they were just happy they got to the end...

Re: PNP Cape Argus Cycle Tour Mar 11th 2012
I was fortunate enough to finish in 6 hours 10 min. So the oldest rider beat me, it's probably his 35th argus, but was only my 1st one. I did not practice much, in fact I only found out I was doing the argus 2 weeks before the time (its a long story). It was extremely hot on chappies, I almost passed out while I was waiting for water when an angel through a cold bottle of ice water over my head (this was not drinking water I was told). At this point right there by the water refreshment point on chappes, the whole race came to a stop because of an accident that happend on the way down chappies, this was the longest wait of my life. Everyone had to get off their bikes and just stand and wait.Stubs wrote:So where shall I start, was going great guns but the heat and chappies just klapped me, I sought the last piece of shade before top only to be told the race had been stopped anyways....so just shy of 90 KM...but yeah didnt make it to the end, but was still a great ride and day out....I think it peaked at about 41 degrees on chappies so not conducive to giving it some....also the 4 refreshement stops before chappies had run out of water and only had coke and powerade which by this stage I was gatvol of.....

If it was not for the friendly people in Houtbay that cooled us down with water showers on the road, I would have still been on the road. Suikerbossie was though, I had to also walk the last 300m and at this point my legs started cramping, not a very nice feeling. Anyway, my stragety was to take it cool with the climbs, but gun it with the downhills to make up for time lost, seems like it paid off. 65km/hour was my fastest downhill speed, the mountainbike just could not go any faster. Besides the heat, it felt great to cross that line, sorry you could not finished your race, better luck next time with the weather.

Re: PNP Cape Argus Cycle Tour Mar 11th 2012

Okay so after a year of collecting dust, I dusted off my Trek this morning, pumped up the tyres, and replaced my regular spinning session with a 30km road cycle to start preparation for next years Hilux 4x4 teams entry to the Argus....
Do you think there are enough cyclists on the Hilux forum to justify Hilux 4x4 club branded cycling shirts and shorts?

Looking at this years 94.7 as a start
Oooms and Ooods both have bonnies too
Niel (Thunder02) also has one, might help with the stop smoking
Worth a shot, I'd say. Maybe please start a new thread.
