Slim vang sy baas
So today I thought I was clever and would save myself a lot of time and effort. So after installing all the cleaned and dried interior items (carpets and seats) I turned my attention to the exterior possible problems after my and Bloudraad's swim (for those that might be out of the loop... viewtopic.php?p=302023#p302023" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)
Well anyway. Part of my plans is to drain both differentials and fill with new oil. So I bought myself a 5L EP90 oil. So far so good. Then I made this little plan to save myself some effort... Fitted a tyre valve and a 2m piece of pipe to the cap of the oil. The plan is to use my Tmax compressor and "inflate" the bottle to create positive pressure so that it forces the oil out through the pipe and into the diff.
Well opened the diff, drained the oil (which was still 100% and no need to replace anyway). Close the drain plug and connect the compressor up to the battery and screw on the inflating valve onto my master piece.
Switch on the compressor for 5 seconds then off again. Give the bottle time to release the pressure. Repeat steps. Then after ding this for about 15 times, it wasn't working as fast as I thought.
Okay, so let's try 8 seconds... 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8 and off. Seems to work a tread. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8 and off. This can work. 1...2...3...4...5...6...7...8...9...10 and BANG. Yes... it popped right at the seam just below the handle and yes, there were a natural barrier that stopped the oil from spraying all over the place..... me. Suddenly that 5L off oil multiplied into at least 208L. In my hair, nose, ears, face and whole upper body. Luckily for me I had my eyes closed at the moment of bang.
But the good thing with a very loud bang is that everybody comes and look what happened so I didn't have to call anyone to assist... they just arrived laughing. Got handed a few of my industrial wet wipes to clean of my face so I could I could open my eyes. And yes... then I saw how 208L of oil looks like on the paving, on the underside of my bakkie, on the wheels, on the... well everywhere in a 5meter radius except of course where I shielded the progress of the oil spray.
Got up, removed my shirt, remove most of the oil with the 2 square inches of shirt that wasn't drenched with oil and went and took a "long" shower. After arriving back at the bakkie took a spade and transplanted halve of my one flower bed to under my van to soak up all the oil that hasn't soaked into the paving yet. The clean up will commence next weekend :?
Took what was left in the now aerated can and poured into a quarter full 5L can of EP90 oil. Also fitting my modified cap. But this process made me think... the oil is to cold and not flowing easy enough. Go into the garage and get an old 20L paint bucket I had in there and halve filled it with hot tap water. Took it outside and put the closed can of oil in the hot water to heat up the oil and cover the bucket with a huge piece of cloth to not repeat my previous attempt. So after the oil heated up a bit... 1...2...3...4...5 and off. Kept on doing this until the diff was full with no further big bangs.
PS: The weak point in the can....

Please note... I don't use EP90 anymore. I now use fully synthetic oil in my SFA. I use Fuchs Titan 75W90 in the gearbox / transfer case and in the differentials 78W140

Cassie gaan loer onder die Suzuki afdeling op die ander forum - ek het daar gepost oor die "extendig diff breathers".
Ek het n soortgelyke kontrapsie gemaak, maar met n dik glas pot. Die lot met die kompressor onder druk geplaas, MAAR die regulator was LAAG gestel !
werk nogal LEKKER.
as jy nou so "bietjie" nader was kon jy die rig geleen het.

Thanks Chris. Het klaar 'n plan uit gedink vir my volgende olie sage. Ek gaan een van Volkswagen se hoëdruk waterbottels gebruik. Dit gebeur maar. Paar jaar gelede met 'n "cheap" water kan gedoen agter in my bakkie met die kompressor. Ek was net nader en het 'n goeie stort gekry.

Unfortunately, or maybe fortunately, the action was just out of view from my CCTV system but here are some screen shots:
To the left most of the screen you will see Bloudraads nose sticking out with my mechanic trolley thingy majic. The next screen I'm bussy inflating the oil bomb to point of rapture. Unfortunately the CCTV system only records when there is movement so it switched of the recording just before the main event Here is the aftermath. At this point I have removed what felt like 25L of oil from my face and upperbody. To the left most of the screen you will see Bloudraads nose sticking out with my mechanic trolley thingy majic. The next screen I'm bussy inflating the oil bomb to point of rapture. Unfortunately the CCTV system only records when there is movement so it switched of the recording just before the main event Here is the aftermath. At this point I have removed what felt like 25L of oil from my face and upperbody. Ek gebruik altyd een van die boot se ou "Bulb hand pumps" om die tipe job te doen. Is net stadig as die olie baie dik is. Ek het nou lekker gelag vir die situasie wat jy vir jouself geskep het!! Ek het onlangs vergeet toe ek die hilux gediens het om die sump se bout terug te draai, het eers onthou toe ek by so 3 liter se olie kom, wat 'n gemors.
