Engine conversion reseach
Hey all...
When I had to replace my water pump on Yoda a few weeks ago, I got thinking that this 2.2 Turbo Diesel is sluggish and what motor do I replace it with when I decide to.....
I want more power so i can tow at a decent speed and not have the trucks pass me on all the hills.....
The thing is the 2.2TD is not the most powerful out there and if you have a load on the bakkie its like driving with the breaks on...... :wth:
Ok I have had a bit of time and I went through all the different forum posts on engine conversations......
Some of the info is quite mind boggeling to say the least.........
Ok now as i see it there are quite a few choices here....
If the people that have done these conversions to their lux's could please comment on their pro's and con's this could help in the decission making for not just me but anyone that wants to do a conversion in the future....
Please state what motor you converted from and to, and any problems involved.......
The costs involved ( if you can remember )
What gearbox was used....
Would you do the conversion again if you had the chance?
Do you wish you did a different conversion, if so which one.....

Re: Engine conversion reseach
Personally I would rather go with the Lexus V6 3.0L (think the engine number is 3GR-FE)

Re: Engine conversion reseach
sorry for the slow response
however
this depends on personal needs and choice
if you not towing big, or not towing at all then a nice Ford V6 conversion seems to be the best bang for your buck
always a pleasure driving with more power then one needs!!
better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it!!
in my case, have a Courier V6 3.4, have most the parts, just need to physically do the conversion
self going for the Lexus V8
why you may ask??
tow heavy, at 1.7ton
yes the V6 does the job, however . . . . . . . . .
have a bell housing for Ford original gearbox to the Lexus V8
hope this helps ans your questions

Re: Engine conversion reseach
Now now Johno, Weren’t you completely against the whole conversion thing before???
If I had a choice I would most certainly stick with a Toy. You already have a diesel so to swop to petrol will be less of a problem than from Petrol do diesel. Well that is how I understand thing. Currently you do not have a problem with electronics. KZTE, Lexus have electronics. Not sure about the rest. For this you at least have a choice. You could go the aftermarket route which is Spitronics or you could go OEM (Original computer). Lexus VVTI has a whole load of more issues to get sorted out before it will be perfect due to the extra electronics and so on but can be done.
If it was my decision then I would go for the 1UZ FE (NON-VVTI) with original computer with the Lexus 4 speed auto box. Reason for this is that The Lexus ECU runs the engine as well as the box. No issues with shifting and so on. Your transfer case can then just be fitted to the auto via an adaptor. Now another reason I would use the OEM computer is because it constantly tracks you’re driving and adjusts your fuel and so on as you go and the aftermarket gets set and it stays set.
Now I am speaking completely under correction and do not know all the facts here so those who know, please do not shoot me… This is what I understand and if I am incorrect please correct me. I would also like to know.
Another engine option is the 2jz-gte straight 6 Supra engine. Much more power than the 1uz… Basically for racing…

Re: Engine conversion reseach
MOFASA - think twice before going through the headache of replacing your motor.
I had a 3CT in Rokorok and thought it was sluggish and underpowered until I fitted a 22R which is more powerful than the 4Y
What a disappointment AND the fuel consumption is DOUBLE!!!
If I was to do it again, I would have fitted an intercooler to the 3CT and perhaps a better turbo and then had it properly dynoed.
but, as they say, hindsite is an exact science...
use it, dont use it...

Re: Engine conversion reseach
I lost track of this post....
So i may as well get the power i want and do a conversion....
The only problem i have is if im not mistaken i have the 3L motor and its a real donkey..... Loose power on a hill and thats without a load....
So i'm looking to just get more power and as far as i have read the best is the ford V6........
Still in 2 minds about the conversion thing and will seriously look into it when i get the time and money.......
But all the info is helpfull...
Yip i was and still am against conversions but this is not the STD motor.... My Hilux came out with a 2L motor not a 2.2TD......Ali3n wrote:Now now Johno, Weren’t you completely against the whole conversion thing before???

2L-T = 2,466cc with Turbo (2.4)
2L-TE = 2,466cc with Turbo (Electronic controlled) (2.4)
3L = 2,779cc (2.8)

Are u seling that belhousing
if I were to sell then I would like to sell the whole set up in a package
Lexus Motor serviced and started up, video of start up on my you tube page
includes spitronics wiring complete as it runs on the youtube video, computer box, idle control valve, relays, mapsensor
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJOiGQt_DbE" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Flywheel, have the Ford clutch, however that is the 3.4 and this makes no difference, could make it part of the package or keep it
have a beautifully made SS surge tank
engine mounts, half way, made of veconite
including the slave cylinder and the screws for belhousing to block, and the flywheel bolts
why would I sell??
have the jeep V8 4.7 to tow
there have been way too many set backs and one can even say that I have lost my enthusiasm about it
still think that its the way to go for towing big
might I regret it?? quiet possible!!
again sorry for the highjack

its just that I had the EXACT same engine.
Dont fit a 22R or a 4Y if you are not happy with the 3CT power - you WILL be disappointed.
If I was going to do it again I would fit the 1UZ Lex with the KTZE Manual Box (cant stand auto personally)
and try and get the OEM ECU story working without the auto box
I would then use a DASTEK UniQ chip to optimise the ECU and tweak it for economy and detune it slightly to prevent drive train breakage.
No risk of drivetrain breakage with my 22R donkey though
