So Saturday I realised it was definitely for a new battery, my Lux was really struggling to turn the starter everytime, and maybe it was just in my head but I am sure my performance was also being effected, pull away felt really bollie.

So being in the area, I deided to pop in at Battery Centre Menlyn.
I tell the chap what I need and he says, that will be R1700.

:shock2: :shock2: :shock2: :shock2:

This sounded a bit excessive to me, I left and headed north to Zambesi drive, Thomas Tyres quoted R1080 but had no stock, I ended up getting one at Supa Quick for R1050.

How does Battery Centre justify R1700 for a battery?
Its the last they will ever see of me there. :disgust:

Guys the rest of the cost is labour... it's not easy to fit a battery you know... and if a properly qualified technician does not fit it, the guarantee may well be voided!

The saddest thing is that there is a considerable amount op people (men & woman) out there driving expensive vehicles that is not even able to locate the jack or sparewheel on his vehicle should the need arise for that. So yes Paying for labour to change a battery is acceptable, but being ripped off is something else.

Mike a couple of years back my mom's car needed a battery. So she phones Battery Centre, they give her the battery size and all ... AND an insane price. My mom not knowing any better orders it !

FORTUNATELY I get to hear of this shortly after she placed the order.

I phone another branch of Battery Centre - HALF the price for the SAME battery !

needless to say I cancelled the order.

It pays to shop around.

It also helps if you know someone with a service station / mechanical workshop and get an order at 'trade price'. ;-)

It seems like chain stores are much more expensive in the menlyn area as opposed to their counterparts in other areas.

Phone TWT in menlyn for prices on tyres, they were 15% more than the branch in Voortrekker Road!!

Guess they price according to the average income of the area!! :P

Hi All,

Quick question to OOOMS, Where did you get the battery for R750, and did you have to take a firearm with to negotiate the price down. I just received a quote for R1375 from Supaquick.... Eina! :shock2:

I can agree to this battery pricing rippoff! Recently (after our Namibia trip) my trusty Dixon (almost 4 years old) also gave up, an overnight charge old did so much good and 2 days later it was same as before, so I took a drive down to Battery Centre. They offer you a choice of 3 types of THEIR brand (Raylite) batteries and low and behold the difference that is punted is the warranty - 18 months for the one with the "gold plates" (sick!). I looked at the prices (and the fact that the lux was now stranded at their test point with a dead as dead (3 volt) battery after the load test, and said to the chap that I wanted the midrange type and the biggest he could fit in the battery tray. If I recall correctly, it was a 636 (around 80AMPS) and the damage was R1700 and change. The whole thing seems to be around the "silver Calcium" that seems to be the "in thing" when it comes to maintenance free batteries. All I can say is that I hope it gives me the same service as the Dixon did! All I ever did was add water when needed!
