Hilux novice needs your advice!
Hi All
So I am looking into buying my first Hilux and need some advice. The car I am looking at buying is a 2001 Hilux Raider 3.0 Diesel engine. Its has done 210,000 kms on the clock. One owner who is a family friend and it looks as though it has been well looked after.
My concern is its 11 years old and has done over 200,00kms.
it is being sold for R100,000
please can you tell me if this is a good deal and if I should be worried about the age and the kms?
Many thanks
Eve

Hi and welcome to the forum. If it's the 3000D Hilux I believe they were prone to head gasket issues

Re: Hilux novice needs your advice!
If it was a 2.7 petrol I would say no problem but unfortunately as Cassie said, many of the diesels had the tendency of head gasket failure round about 180,000km to 220,000km. Maybe find out from the service history if this have been done already.

Hi & Welcome Eve!
If it is 3000 D-E then I'll give it a pass.
(Its slow and hevy on feul, but depends on what you are upgrading from)
If it's a 3.0 KZTE and has a FSH then its a good buy, otherwise get a mach'ie to check it for you.

Welome!
It's a real donkey, but it will go forever and repairs are cheap by diesel standards, they are very popular with farmers and are good workhorses, but don't expect to maintain 120km/h on the open road, so if you have more time than money it will do, the km's are low by hilux standards and apart from the odd gasket, it won't give problems

My self am not a big diesel fan. I have owned one of same exact one luxes and i did not like the motor at all. I have traded her for a petrol and never looked back. The diesel was slow and drank the diesel like a coal train on its way to Cape town, and then on 130000 km the engin started with over heating problems. I have spend in total rough figure of about R25 000 on repairs and it was still not what she was. I got to a point where explained to the buyer what the problem was, he was happy and of he went, never heard from him again.
Get some on who knows about hiluxes to assist you in this matter....take him with. And remember! Summer is on its way and the last thing you want is problems with overheating.

Price to High. Got my 1999 2.7 for R110 000 with 154 000kms, with all the goodies,I should say about R90 000. If it is a single cab also less then.

Hi Eve and welcome!
Cannot fault any of the advice already given. Personally I would give it a miss though, even at R90,000.
For the price being asked you should be able to find a 2.7i (4x4) D/Cab in fairly good nick, and although they are also notoriously thirsty, they are still a much better option IMO.

Eve, welcome to the forum.
Personally I think it is way too much money for it, even if it is a family friend.

Re: Hilux novice needs your advice!
Price is way to high for a single cab.
I service some of those with 400 000kms and more on the clock, unopened, one has 560 00kms unopened, and they can give 10 km/l if you're not in a hurry, all depends what your needs are, but i'll chose a KZTE or 2.7i in that price range.

Hi All
thanks so much for your advice although sounds like I should give it a miss judging by most of your comments!
I checked with the owner and it is a KZTE and a double cab.
Which makes it slightly better I guess!
Thinking about switching to a Rav4 but they seem almost impossible to get hold of in Joburg!
thanks again

If it is the KZ then it should a good buy, also D/Cab, it change the the whole decision. Have it checked out by the AA, if it pass then go for it.

Eve, some of the guys here are just jealous - ignore them!! A D/C KZTE changes the picture a whole lot! 210k Km's it's just running in, depending on the overall condition I'd say go for it at that price. Try to get some pics posted here for more comment.

Re: Hilux novice needs your advice!
Hi Eve,
Welcome
I have not been disappointed by my Hilux!
Suggest that you look closely at the deal with your family friend and what price is being paid. Usually it is close to book so suggest that you look at ensuring that you both sign some sort of a warranty clause. Most dealers will beat the price down because they have to stand up with the warranty for 6 months. It breaks, you advise, they fix.
Taking that your deal has a certain element of emotional purchase, you may not be getting the sharpest price so tread carefully. What is a family friend may be a family feud should something break that was seemingly overdue.
Suggest that you phone a couple of dealers and say that you are selling your XYZ, what price can they give as an indication prior to you getting there for a valuation. This will be interesting!
As suggested, take it to the AA for a full check and decide on the risk from there.

Yes, the fact that it's a KZTE makes a whole lot of difference. Then it's certainly a worthwhile deal. Have it checked out first if you like, but go for it.
