Spares Box

Post by Rampie »

What is in your your spares box / tool box?

I carry a set of spanners, screwdrivers, sockets, allen keys & hex keys, waterpump pliers, vice grip, rubber hammer, normal hammer and big hammer, power bar, 12v drill and bits, electrical multimeter and a soldering iron.

Spares include the obvious oil, filters, fanbelt, fuses, bulbs, silicone sealant, steel putty, super glue, electrical wire, terminals, different rubber pipes, threaded rods with washers and nuts, bolts, u-bolts, clamps, spray oil & insulating tape. For our 4 week trip to I will also have a generator, welder, grinder and spare steel (and springs and shocks) on board.

Am I going overboard or what else should one take?

Hallo Andre,

Spare yellow tape, the ones that you have to blak these days to your trailer or caravans sides, come in handy when your reflectors are not sufficient at some African borders. Also a good wire cutter. Maybe a carton of cheap cigarettes also for the African cops.

Regards,
Louis

Jy het die draaibank vergeet! :)

Nee wat. Daai klink vir my na about alles. Jy kan wel miskien iets soos Q20, bloudraad, cable ties en duct tape bysit.

Perparing for a trip is a difficult thing to do as you always think of the worst.
You could fill the entire BAK with spares and tools and never need them but you could also forget to take a 13mm spanner and gauranteed that will be the only spanner you will need. MURPHY.

I reckon your list is pretty comprehensive, are you sure you have space for the family?
It also depends on where you will be headed as most small towns in most African countries will have some sort of backyard where you can do minor repairs. If you have the space and aren't concerned about weight, then take it all.

Just one thing, are you sure you drive a hilux?  just had to check, never thought we needed spares.

Belangrikste item in by toolbox is duct tape en cable ties.

Moet eintlik gaan vir so basiese mechanics kurses. Weet enigiemand waar ek dit kan doen hier agter die boereworsgordyn (die teabag curtain is net te wyd)
