Seperate Fridge/ammo slide rails for loadbox

Post by Polarbear2008 »

I recently upgraded from a Waeco CF-50 to a National Luna 74 Litre dual door fridge/freezer and discovered that my current frigde slide is not going to work anymore.

Also the fact that we are touring soon through Namibia for 3 weeks made me rethink the setup of my loadbox for traveling.

I have designed, and am in the process of building a twin-slide for the loadbox, that will have the NL on the left on a seperate platform and the ammo platform next to it, so that one can pull out and open the fridge without having to pull out a full platform (like the truckslides some members have).

Reason for this thinking is that SWAMBO finds that the full truckslide is to heavy to manage.

So today I parted with some hard earned cash for a pile of steel, and the show will start in the coming week after work, as the timetable is rather truncated before we go on our tour.

I will post progress photos, as we go along, and of the final product once fitted.

Dankie manne!

Daar is tans baie idees waarmee ek speel.

Why not use teflon rollers?

Have you tried Bearing man thats where i get all my bearings for work and their prices are very good.........

Sealed Roller bearings you dont need to go to big.... an OD of 22mm will be secure enough and that has a 8mm ID so you can use a M8 HT Cap Screw to secure it and its 7mm wide....... bearing number FROM otherwise 608 or 608.2Z or 608.2RS if you give bearing man those numbers they can give you their equalivent..... dont forget to ask for sealed bearings......

Hi Chaps!

I shopped around a bit and found that the first quote was a MAJOR rip-off! The 2 subsequent quotes had "F.A.G." and some Chinese models on and varied from about R7 for the Chinese to R17 for the "F.A.G."! Now I can go ahead with the plans! Phew! Almost had to take a loan to make the project work!

All the rails are cut and most of them drilled for fitting the bolts that will hold the guide rollers. The next step is to figure out how big to make the slides to accommodate all the goodies like fridges and ammo boxes.

I opted to stick to the 12mm bolts as I am not quite sure how much my 74lite NL fridge will weigh once filled with frozen food, and I don't want to take any chances!

Sorry have not had a chance to upload some photos yet. :(

Was test fitting the rails last night, and took some photos, and uploaded one.

Next thing is the welding of the "deck" that will slide on the rails.... As the deck runs on u channel, it can be wider thand the angle iron than contains the roller bearings, so the decks are 500mm wide and 1360mm long! Big enough to hold my 74 litre National Luna with ease!

I am impressed!

The project has been moved to the back seat for the past week as things at work have been a bit crazy. We also had training on half of Friday past and Saturday, so that was also a write-off.

The plan is to do most of the welding next weekend, and if time allows, also the install of the base frames, which will make us at least 60% done, with many photo ops along the way!

At this point, most of the steel has been cut and drilled, and all the bolts, nuts and washers, as well as the galvanised steel either collected or delivered.

I cannot wait to get it all together! 1 more week!

Tonite I finished cutting the last of the steel and thought that I would take a few pics of the test fitting of the rails.

Now it is only the welding on Saturday, and all can come together!

Saturday arrived and the welding started! We measured twice, sometimes 3 times and then put fire to steel!

Things are starting to take shape nicely now, and the basic structures, should be completed by tomorrow night. Then it is only the finishing touches that need to be added to make it complete. I added some more photos for those interested....

Well we fitted the lock to the one rail last night, and all works as intended.

If all goes well, the other one will get it's turn tonight and then the fun starts, as I still need to put the galv steel plate tops on, and finish it off - all by the weekend!

I will take more photos as work progresses towards the end.

Good news!

just returned from a 3 week trip in Namibia with from very good to very bad gravel roads and the slide system was up to the task.

I learnt 1 lesson- alu rivets are no match for gravel roads, as the ones that kept the slide locks to the slides failed about halfway into the trip. I replaced them with Stainless bolts with nyloc nuts and all was well again, all the way back to rainy RSA!

Well done, Theunis!
How does your "locking" work? I see your pic from the slider side... could you take one where it's locked in place?

Royco I will do that for you.

In the meantime I will try to explain it (see attached drawing)

There is a slide pin lock at the rear of the slide [yellow], which locks into a piece of steel [purple] that is welded so that it stands vertically. To release the lock the end of the pin is connected to an "L" shape piece of metal [in the middle - green], and when the lever [orange] is pulled at the end of the 8mm threaded rod, the pin in the centre of the rod drops, effectively shortening the cable [green] running in the middle of the slide.

This in turn pulls the "L" shape towards the rod, which in turn pulls the plunger of the lock.

There is a similar vertical plate as the purple one at the rear) [pink] where I want the slide to stop. Only difference is that its shape is the opposite of the rear one. The curve "leads" the plunger to the locking hole, which holds it in place. To close the slide, pull the handle, which releases the plunger, and push the slide until it locks again at the rear.

These mechanisms are reversed for the other side of the twin slide.

Hope this makes sense!

I cannot take credit for all of the mechanism as I "stole with the eyes" from Niel's slide and modified the release mechanism to work the way I wanted it to. The pin locks come from McNaughtans in Parow. Most of the other bits were bought from Brights Hardware.

I have now completed a bracket for my 74L Luna. Will post photos soon. The welder is working nicely and allows me do tackle jobs I otherwise would not be able to. What amazes me as how low amps one needs to weld DC. I have not yet gone higher than 90 - 95 amps!
