4.0 V6 fuel consumption

Post by Mornes »

My 4.0 Auto Hilux averages around 6-7 km/liter, depending on road type. With 31 inch tyres it seems to be reasonablewhen comparing with others. I have however heard of Fortuners claiming consumption between 9-10km to a liter? the two cars should compare reasonably as the Fortuner is slighly heavier and has bigger tyres standard?

Buddy of is running a 4.0 V6. His consumption is the same as yours when driving in town or at 160km/h. Driving at 110 - 120km/h his getting 9km/l

For that kind of power I think it's worth it. I drove this truck offroad a small while ago and I still can't get over it. :o:

I've got the V6 MANUAL Fortuner and in town I get about 8km/l with a lightish foot and on the open road about 8.5km/l (unladen) at a steady 120km/h.

Since my Fortuner 4.0 V6 manual is my company vehicle I keep detailed records of fuel and costs for purposes of SARS. To date I have driven 12379km and have put in 1331litres of 95super. This gave me on average 9.3km/l or 10.76l/100km.

This for a quite heavy 4.0 v6 with big tyres is not bad according to me. I do not tend to drive faster than 130km/h. A lot of this driving is in heavy traffic conditions between Pretoria and Midrand.

Despite all the negative critisism about handling on dirt (which I have not experienced) I am very very very satisfied with my Fortuner :) . I also have old Agteros (a 1986 Hilux DC 2200 4Y) which is my favourate. :D :D See my pics of Agteros in the "members rides".

this is truely an interresting phenomena. I think to average close to 10km/l for a 4x4 petrol (not even to mention a 4l V6) is excellent, i know of no other similar vehicle that comes even close. Then again, i didn't buy mine for the consumption...

my vehicle was 'chipped' by Rob Green Motor sport and i think power gain was his main goal. I improved to 129kw on the wheels which equates to close to 200kW at the flywheel. I suppose this power comes at a price.

Thanks for the feedback; I im however still curious as to why the significant difference between the two vehicles...

I guess that the auto vs. manual will make some difference as well but may be driving style also play a role. I tend to "look ahead" in the traffic to make the ride as constant as possible, I also avoid hard braking and acceleration.

Hi Mornes

I've done 5270km with my 4.0L V6, Auto and used 814 litres. average comsumption 6.47km / L. or 15L/100km It's stock standard and has standard tyres. This includes town and open road driving but mostly town driving so lots of stop and go. I dont push too hard. On open road consumption improves to about 7-8 km/L at about 130km/h provided i dont use cruise control.

Hi there,

I have a 2011 V6 Auto 4x4 Hilux. I have done 7178km using 1076.84l of 93 Unleaded, which works out to an average of 14.99l/100km or 6.67km/l. This is about 50/50 traffic and open road driving.

Cheers

I'd like to share the result of an interesting experiment.
I used to get between 6.5 and 6.8km/l with my 4.0 V6 Auto Hilux.
I do not drive very fast, i keep to the speed limit, 95% of the time.
So last week Tuesday, before the huge petrol hike i filled up, and decided to try something.
I started driving like an old man, no offense to anyone, it is just a figure of speech :-)
I slowed down my acceleration significantly, so it takes me a lot longer to get up to speed, but i get there. Much to the annoyance of everyone behind me.
My cruising speed still remains the same. eeping to the speed limit.
Today i filled up again, and the results were astounding !!!!
My fuel consumption on the last tank was, 7.93Km/l, that is an increase of 14.2%, just by adapting my driving style.
It would be very interesting to know what the consumption will be when I have the cats removed and have Kosie Swanepoel chip it !!

Shoe Tertius,

What's the point then of having the beast??

I drive like bat out of hell and average between 6.2 and best was 7.2km/l (and then I am cruising at up to 180km/h)

Tried the 120 thing but not working very well for me...all those horses under the bonnet get restless.

Manual, V6 4.0 and going for 310 000 on the clock and ticking like a swiss watch.

I like to keep it under 120, then i enjoy the drive.
