Modern day V6 Cortina?

Post by Dodging »

This thought crossed my mind the other day. We all remember the V6 Cortina. It was a relatively affordable car, in almost every street there was someone that had one in the driveway, practical for the family, easy to add go-faster bits on and gave excellent performance when you were in a hurry.

So what would you guys rate as the modern day version of this car? Doesn't have to be a Ford BTW...

With the wind blowing right and a nice long down hill you can easily use those words in the same sentence... like, for instance: "Look at that Hilux, wouldn't it be amazing if it could go fast?"

For the records, a V6 Cortina was never a fast car, not even in it's day, it made a lot of noise, had no roadholding and bad brakes, but it was cheap to run and it could smoke tyres and tow a large caravan and you could fit all kinds of chrome stuff to it. It had it's a.ss kicked by Datsun 1200's Minis, Alfas, etc. Maybe a 1600 Citigolf is the replacement, it's faster, can smoke tyres and the caravans are smaller these days.

I had an Escort RS 2000 myself, one of the most fun cars i've ever owned, and it could kick a Cortina V6's a.ss, but it diefinately didn't have Cyclones and Tiger Firepowers on.

BMW 325IS is still legend (very popular in townships for drift and spinning clubs), then there's the Toyota Gli TwinCam 16v - still famous to date for turbo conversions, in a way much like the Lexus, you see it a lot with 1400 bakkies modified for drag racing.

A white Corolla 160I perhaps?

Affordable, EVERY road had a few, practical for family use, if you really wanted you could add go-faster goodies, ok-ish performance, good economy and affordable to maintain!

Used to run rings around the Cortinas with my Renault 5 1400. In 1981 I built one up with lighter flywheel, twin side draughts, branch and exhaust system. The head was done by John Conchie from Alpine developments in Pinetown. damn that car was quick. Today I think the Opel OPC are quite quick.

This is quiet a interesting topic

Have been up and down the list aleady mentioned and the list in my head

And there realy isent a replacement
The one that comes the closest is the golf
Golf isent realy a tow vehicle, besides that golf spares are plenty and go fast parts are avaklable off the shelf

And now me u derstand why they say that
G O L F
stands for
Gee Ons Livers Ford

Besides the lexus V8, the Toyota straight 6 24valve is becoming hugely popular and dont be surprised to see one running in the 7second 1/4mile times soon
The guys are getting huge power out of them, and the go fast parts are available over the net from the USA

Just thought of something
What about the Subarus
Just not cheap, and less reliable then the V6, a member here and a friends has one
However parts are available , they are fast, and can tow a caravan and carry the family
