Hi All,

So today when I arrived @ the office after @ weeks of absence, i received the following email from Rina @ ORRA offices.

will somebody please explain it to me in simple English, because i don't see any amount due.

Due to the restructuring of the licensing tariffs by ICASA it has been decided that only paid-up ORRA members will receive a full rebate for the 2013/14 licence year and no fees will be charged for the 2013/14 year.

ORRA is not charging for any renewal of licenses this year. You will only pay for new licenses.

The club has also received an invoice for our 8 Radios and total came to R0

I have known for quite a while of this possibility but due to ICASA dragging their feet, the guys from ORRA could not confirm. So all being said and done, seems like they are definitely a good bunch of guys and not trying to rip us a new one... but they are limited in that ICASA makes the rules

legally they cant charge us - as the NEW laws and the current system seems to leave some unanswered questions .....

ICASA now charges oer licence - i.e. ORRA - and no longer per radio. Therefore, they could not legally charge you per radio. What is surprising is the fact that they also do not charge annual membership (or Admin) fees. That, they are perfectly entitled to do but it would have been a opiddly amount, something like R25. So yes indeed, a big

to them for their honesty!

So you guys can buy more radios now - quickly, before the price shoots up! ;)

Was chatting to some radio hams,they do not get charged per radio but per person with a licence.I could not understand how they chop and change radios all the time,until i was told the radios are not licenced .Is this true FD?

Orra has surplus funds which is not the aim of a non profit organisation. If also means that they overcharged us the past year. That is why they give back the surplus to the members. So renewals for this year is free

With a HAM, the operator is licensed where as with ORRA it was the radio that were licensed

Yep, although nowadays the licence is charged for Commercial users, irrespective of the number of radios on it. The fees charged per licence are dependent upon many factors, Frequency Congestion, Operating Area, Frequency (UHF is cheaper than VHF), Bandwidth and a couple of other parameters I will only remember after my next cup of coffee.
