Cross border equipment requirements

hello everyone,

In 2 months time I'm heading off on a bit of a soft over landing trip (all tar roads) for about 3 weeks. Sadly we wont be using a Hilux for the trip, but that's another story for another time.

We'll be traveling through SA, Namibia, (through Caprivi to) Zambia, Malawi and finishing in Moz.

It's been a couple years since I did an over landing trip so I'm a bit foggy on what we need to keep the border officials happy.

I recall needing:
- ZA sticker
- 2 reflective vests
- 2 red triangles

What else do I need?

You are starting with the "easy" one - Namibia

ZA sticker
Registration papers for your vehicle (or letter from bank)
Travel document from your insurer
Passports
ID's
Drivers license
IF SA Passport you should not need any VISA's for SADC countries

The fun starts with Zimbabwe and Moz ....

Extra white and red reflective strips required on the bumpers for Moz - get these from Outdoorwharehouse

Keep TWO emergency triangles ready to show to the bribe-cops.

Reflective vest for EACH occupant in the vehicle - for Moz

Jonathan, also check the date on which the fire extinguisher was last serviced- needs to be no older than 6 months.

And it was not the border officials that gave us problems, it was the police that stopped us.

If I can give you advice- get a carnet- it's bit pricey, but it takes away basically any risk of officials bending your arm at borderposts.

For traveling in Africa- best thing since sliced bread. A "Carnet de passage" - French for "permit to pass" if I'm not mistaken.

It's basically the "temporary import permit" for your vehicle into each country you go. Normally you fill in an application for a TIP at each border entry, and pay for it. You buy it only from AA, you buy one page per country- about R250 per page- but there is no application for TIP at the border upon entry, no paying for it in local currency or US$, minimum checking of VIN, engine, registration numbers etc- hence less chance of a "mistake" costing you extra money. Plus you get your money back for the pages you did not use.

Where you're going, I'll certainly seriously consider it, check out the website, and visit your AA.
