Off to her final resting place !
Well me old faithful has finally run its last leg, time to let her be put out to pasture !! Will be sorely missed !! That was her injuries ! Still runs, no damage to motor, chassis downwards etc or hardly the load bay, my injuries, compression fractures to T3 and T11 spine, fractured scapula, fractured 3 ribs, fractured sternum, sprained ankles, wrists, cuts an bruises covering the rest ! Hospital for 5 nites now laid up for next four weeks to let spine repair itself....am very lucky, my co driver went through windscreen only superficial injuries luckily... So guess its time to hunt for a replacement !!

Good grief, Stu!! :wth: This is not good news at all!! So saddened to read this thread, but at least the injuries to you and your co-driver, although serious enough, were not life threatening .... I suppose one can be grateful for small mercies.
And the van! Shame, she's really buckled and bent, a mere shadow of her former self .... maybe time to build a pipe-car / challenge vehicle.
Hope you recoveries are speedy and complete without long lasting effects! You will be in our thoughts and prayers.

Sheridene's memory is really bad these days, but when I told her of this she immediately remembered you from Scheppie Saus .... (probably because you were one of the noisiest buggers there! ). Anyway, she also sends her best wishes for a wholesome recovery!

Re: Off to her final resting place !
Tks one and all, yes a very sad time indeed for me ! Was my pride and joy as u all know, was not offroading but on tar coming back down the Hemel en aarde valley back to sandbaai, there's a nasty steep tight turn left, have driven it a thousand times if not more ! As I braked, geared down and turned into I suddenly had no steering !!! Tried to compensate but just didn't want to slow down ! Hit the ditch opposite side of bend and that's what flipped it !! To be honest I don't know what to do with her now, it probably could be rebuilt but at wot cost ? Or do I just be realistic and just sell off as spares, its all OME, tjms, 35" muds, 15 x 10j mags, long range tank, dual batt, load bay is good, rear wheel carrier, plus the diffs, props, axles, gearbox, transfer case, motor etc...breaks my heart to take her apart but I think its for the best in the long run.. Will even sell the whole thing as is.... As for me I will heal, think my heartache will be the longest to mend

Re: Off to her final resting place !
Geez Stu, that looks worse than the Top Gear Hilux that they set alight, smashed through a caravan, drove into the sea and put on top of a 14-storey building that they subsequently blew up with explosives.
Glad you're OK though, the outcome may have been very different with a newer model. What cause the steering to go - draglink broke?
Why don't you get hold of that crowd in Pinetown and rebuild the body with one of their Fibre Glass kits. I think there is someone here who did just that. Their website seems to have gone a bit haywire, but give Steve a ring at 0845486377
Hiluxes are tough, yours can soon be back on the road again - with a new genuine tierod or whatever!

Flip i'm sorry man! If it helps i did once see you drive past me once and i thought to myself hell i want those tires!
Sorry for your loss, i sold mine, and even though it isn't really the same and it must hurt every time you see her you still miss the driving experience. Perhaps its time to get another. Maybe you can get away with just another cab.Would be epic to see the rebuild. They are tough buggers these hiluxes.

Re: Off to her final resting place !
Hey guys, tks for all the love and support, means a lot, well took piets advice and gonna strip, gotta a mate gonna start on it this morning, I can't watch !! Gonna put the proceeds to a new SFA so keep me posted of anything u see or know about !! Gonna build it up again just me old faithful so watch this space ! Gonna be wider and higher than before !! As for wot happenend my steering knuckle sheared straight of, so the must have been play on it and the wear and tear over time just took its toll, as for the accident scence yes it was just past the dam turnoff and La Vierge restaurant on the right hand side, its a nasty bend of not and I am not the first or last to have succumbed to it !!! So as I said on a previous thread its all for sale, bear in mind I want to put towards a new truck. Wots funny is if u look at foties and the state of the roof my full length roof console made it out in once piece, not one inch of damage, and the snorkel is still intact !! The tjm bullbar saved the motor with not even a dent in the radiator, the frontrunner roofbars came of intact as did the hilift jack, radio antennas didn't fair so well though lol, but as u have all said, I crawled out alive, the girl with me has had her stitches removed, however she is still traumatized over the whole event. I am on the mend albeit walking around like thys ! Lol... But stubs will be back, meaner and badder this time around ! So looking for a D/cab or single cab SFA or a jeep like thy's..something I can build up again !!!!

Hennie, just dismantle the cup-ends on your drag-link and you can remove it. Once removed, you can inspect the balls on the "J"-arm and Pitman arm. You will immediately see if they are worn. Best replace them if so.

Oom Andy, I have no idea off what you are talking about... or is it those big flat head bolt/ screws that you can adjust with a big flat screwdriver for play on the wheels? there is one in front and one at the back with split pins...Mud Dog wrote:Hennie, just dismantle the cup-ends on your drag-link and you can remove it. Which steering knuckle sheared straight of?Left or right hand side? Why I am asking is because you replace your passengers side shaft with one you bought a couple of months ago from me.If it was the left hand side who sheared of the meccie who replace that side shaft for you on your vehicle was suppose to see if there was something wrong with that steering knuckle if any at that point of time.
Just my 2cw

Dawie, I'm not sure that Stu means the 'swivel hub' knuckle ... if you look at the pics they still look ok as well as the tie-rod (still connected - the wheels still point in the same direction). I think he means the ball on the steering J-arm or Pitman sheared off.

Grant, that company is "Mboza", they have featured on this site a few times before. To the best of my recollection, there haven't been any super positive feed-backs - but no real negative ones either. I seem to recall that there have been issues with getting the doors to fit nicely.4x4Grant wrote:Stuart there is a company that do fiber glass bodys for your Hilux I will chat to a mate and see if I can get a contact. Re: Off to her final resting place !
In 1996 I rolled my Hilux at about 120Km/hr. down and embankment and into a ravine. We were lucky to have no injuries at all. The Hilux go a new body and lived on for many years until I sold her in the Transkei. It's probably still there somewhere carrying goats and water drums. Long live Hilux.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.
