Building a trailer?!?!
Hi all the Hilux people
I want to find out from all the know how here.....
Is it possible to build your own trailer and have it registered. I have heard that you may not do this any longer...
Is this so or are there a procedure you have to follow when wanting to do this....

As far as I know to get a 'built from scratch 'trailer registered you have to get SANS approval etc. You best bet would be to take a registered trailer and to build on the registered chasis what your needs are.
must highlight that the above is what I have heard from others.

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
AFAIK you are allowed to home build a trailer with a payload of up to 750kgs, any more and you have to be a registered trailer builder.
But others here might know better.

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
750 kg should be enough for a off road trailer. Shouldn't it?????IndianaJones7746 wrote:AFAIK you are allowed to home build a trailer with a payload of up to 750kgs, any more and you have to be a registered trailer builder.

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
Johan,

Andre

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
Having a 750kg payload does not mean you have to use a 750kg axle, you can use heavier duty items.
It just means that if they do pull you off at a weighbridge, you should be within that limit.
Just remember to keep all slips of parts you acquired with the build, the traffic department will ask for it.
Your local traffic department should know the procedure, at some point you will need the police to assign a number to the chassis, the trailer will have to go through roadworthy, etc, etc.

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
I have a half build 5,5m trailer with brand new brake axles, coupler, parking jacks and all the rest. Just to find out the law has changed and you can't register it if it is homebuild. Just paid for a 6m double brake axle. I just ordered the chassis/frame - 6m frame, no loadbed/deck,no paint, no sides or anything. Just the axles, rims and tyres, coupler, lights & wiring and data dot with papers from a registered trailer builder. Paid R29 800 incl.

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
As far as I know, you cannot register a home-built trailer any more. What you can do is to either follow the route that Jacques was forced to (as above) or you can approach a registered trailer builder and ask if he would be prepared to register it for you. Most often they will not because that's their business, they will probably suggest you give them your custom requirements and they will build it. Remember that they become the registered manufacturer and should something go wrong (like an A-frame snap), resulting in an accident with loss of life the finger will point at them. They could loose their registration.
If they are prepared to do it, they will more than likely want to first inspect the trailer for competent welding, material adequacy and integrity of design. For this they will probably charge you heavily, almost as much as if they had built it themselves, so it's not really worth it.
Another option is to buy a cheap old dilapidated / rusted trailer that's already registered, one that has a registered load capacity suitable for your requirements and either use the axle and base or build a new base for it. If the old one had a plate with chassis number on it, just transfer that to the new base - or if there was a number stamped into the chassis, then stamp that same number into your new chassis. I'm not too sure about this, but if it's a relatively new trailer (first year of registration) then beware because it could have been photographed at registration and that photo goes into the e-natis database. If your rebuild does not resemble the original, you could have problems if they ever have reason to check.

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: Building a trailer?!?!
The issue is with the welding - registered trailer builders use coded welders (or are supposed to)
EASIEST would be to get a "rolling chassis" from a registered trailer builder, then build what you want ontop of it ....
go for a braked axle from the get go.
Check your tow vehicle and use this for the weight limits of the trailer - DONT exceed this or you are asking for trouble at a weigh bridge.

My little 4 footer was photgraphed at the pound; had to get a new chassis number issued & stamped as the old serial number was too short.Mud Dog wrote: I'm not too sure about this, but if it's a relatively new trailer (first year of registration) then beware because it could have been photographed at registration and that photo goes into the e-natis database. Whether the pics go into e-natis I dunno, there is an Audi driving the e-toll roads with my trailer's plates...
