Kumho KL71
Hey Guys what are your thought on the Kumho KL71 range, I need to replace my BF ATs but due to price the Kumho looks more inviting ?

Re: Kumho KL71
I went from BF's to KL71's for the same reason and was a bit disappointed in the performance in the KL's. I have recently fitted Cooper STT's also because of price and can say they perform better than the KL's. Plus they were cheaper by about R200 a tyre...

Re: Kumho KL71
Just to add to what Dylan said:
I also run Cooper STT's and I'm very happy with them. I paid R1695 per tyre last year December, compared to R3000 for a BFG Mud and R2500 for BFG A/T tyre.
If you don't want muds, try Cooper ST Maxx or AT3.

Re: Kumho KL71
Thanks Guys!
What where your reasons for disappointment? Ride? Traction ? etc?
I will try shop around for some Coopers and see what deals I can find, OBV Cooper to me over the KL71's but I was under the impression they cost a lot more.

Re: Kumho KL71
Cooper and Maxxis both good tyres.
BFG is like Landrover - people get all emotional when you say that they are not the best.
Had BFG A/T on a Colt before, and have never had worse wet tar grip from ANY tire! Kumho as not let me down. Had the same A/T (KL78) type on 2 vehicles now, and cannot complain.
Had complete a 6000km trip to NAM and back last year June, and only had 1 puncture (due to a nasty cut under one of the blocks) on a well known piece of bad road around Sesriem. I will buy Kumho again, anytime!
My 2c worth.

Re: Kumho KL71
I must agree the BF Goodrich AT have bee a big let down on the Grip, I still have like 30% tread, yet in the wet I need to start breaking 500m down the road to stop. Also the side walls where weak, and took such a beating on my last off road trip... (called the agents and got nothing but excuses). I did manage now over 80 000km + on them so no complaints there.
I am very very keen on the Kumho, but have been offered the Maxxis Bighorn for the Same Price. I am worried that the Maxxis is going to be Noisy, but have heard they brilliant all round. Coopers are also on my list, but got very mixed feedback.

Re: Kumho KL71
One thing to check is that Kumho tires are directional - what that means is there is an arrow on the sidewall marked "rotation". This limits you to rotating tyres (if you do this) from front to back and back to front (unless you remove the tires from the rims each time you rotate tires.)
I'm not sure if Maxxis are the same, but have only heard good things about them. One has got to remember that anything with more aggressive tread than road tires, are going to create a fair amount of noise. The loudest of these being M/T treads, as there are larger gaps between the blocks. BFG's great claim to fame is the high sidewall ply rating and high possible milage per set - this being due to a harder rubber compound = poorer grip in the wet.
If you want an honest opinion about Maxxis, speak to Cris Ingram of R&D Offroad (021-982 8921). He has sold and raced with them! Cris is very passionate about 4x4 and will give you and honest answer every time - he built his business that way!

Re: Kumho KL71
Maxxis are good, stronger sidewalls than the KL 71's, but the muds are very noisy, KL 71 is much quieter and better in sand. Dificult choice.
Like i said before, my first choice is Goodyear MTR and BFG MT second.

Re: Kumho KL71
i have 33x12.5x15 kumho m/t's on the 80 series-far quieter than the stt's and happy with them!
can see they will not give the kilos of the stt or even bf's-but handling is better-gravel,tar and even wet tar!
big thing to remember is that a tyre that gives you lots of km's is not allways safe!

Re: Kumho KL71
If you complain about the BfG's side wall you better stay away from the Khumo's. I had a set of Khumo muds on and all the punctures where on the side wall. I took them of after 59 000km's.JaMMeX wrote:I must agree the BF Goodrich AT have bee a big let down on the Grip, I still have like 30% tread, yet in the wet I need to start breaking 500m down the road to stop. I'm on my 2nd set of BFG muds now and I doubt if I will buy anything else. I will never buy BFG A/T again. 1st set of BFG Muds did 88 000km's with only one puncture. And I do a lot of 4x4 in my work. I manufacture and install lattice masts and it is 95% of the times on mountains.
Got my 2nd set of muds for around R9900 for a set in December in Welkom.

Roy,
The R1695 was in December 2012. It was at Dunlop Zone in Lynnwood Road Pta East.
I don't know if they still sell it.

I've had both, both awesome tyres. BF's last longer because of the harder compound but slip much more on hard rocky surfaces.JaMMeX wrote:As expected it was too good to be true! the BFs where not Muds but ATs and a waste of time!
