Insuring a low value SFA
Hi there
So I want to insure my SFA. Rooies is old, slow and a bit rusty, but she's mine and I'd be the hell in if she was stolen/written off or worse, I bump someone in something expensive like a Lambo.
My old insurer won't insure me anymore because Rooies isn't worth much, which is true, I reckon on a good day, I'd get R50k. Tuffstuff won't cover me for the same reason, too little value even with the accessories and I don't have any household goods (I'm a student, staying in rented accommodation) to add to the policy to bump up the value.
Any suggestions on an insurer that I could use? I don't even need comprehensive cover, I'd happily settle for 3rd party/fire/theft.

Quick question though... can they simply say you cannot insure it anymore? Is it not part of an agreement / contract you signed that they have adhere to as long as you keep paying your premium?

Surely you should be able to insure it for 3rd party/fire/theft.
Thats what I did back in the day with my VW golf 1. As you say, it will cover you in the case of an accident or worse, injury to any 3rd party. To me it is a must!

All my worldly possessions are insured with M&F, I find them really good and will probably still insure with them even after I start to play a harp. Find a Broker who works through M&F.

Re: Insuring a low value SFA
Rooies was vir R33 000 verseker teen +/- R400 n maand.
Het n oproep van versekering hulle laas week gekry en hulle verseker hom nou vir R85 000-00 vir net R50-00 n maand meer.
Ek kan nie meer gelukkig wees nie...

We are with M&F and my wife has left the police (in 2 weeks) 2 years ago. Still no payment from her pension.
The problem is on M&F's side as they keep on giving the wrong banking details.
She has completed the forms 12 times and still it is wrong. We will be moving away from them as soon as
pension has been payed out

Re: Insuring a low value SFA
Kevin,
I think you might be referring to Old Mutual, not M&F (Mutual & Federal). Old Mutual do long term insurance (Pensions, RA etc) while M&F handles household and car insurance, etc.
But that is bad, they must pay your pension out - although it is always a good idea to try keep it up. Once a person turns 40 the years just fly by and quite often then it is too late to start a pension.
Then you end up selling radios...
(Just kidding - I love my job!)

Nephew Kevin, you're not the first person to make that mistake... as long as you still remember you drive a Hilux and not a Nissan... ;)

Re: Insuring a low value SFA
That's the response from M&F...Good day,
Kindly we do not do vehicle only insurance, the policy must have contents or building cover included. For vehicle older than 20 years we will need an engineers report unless they are insured for thrid party only. For a quote kindly complete the relevant sections on the attached proposal form
