protecting the rear window from stones
I have an overlanding trip planned over Xmas to Namibia and I'll be towing a trailer with my Prado. A point of discussion is protecting the rear window from stones/rocks bouncing back off the trailer.
what ideas / advice is there to prevent any of this happening? I thought of maybe getting one of those seed nets and covering the rear window.

Go to somewhere that builds filters, they usually have off cuts of heavy gauge mesh
Happy trails

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
Scott, how about one of those stone deflectors that fit between the vehicle and the trailer, my wife has been looking at making something in that line.

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
Scott I lost my rear window like that. I have fitted a permanent shadenet cover to my trailer's front. It must be loose fitted to absorb the speed of the stones. Problem solved.

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
Gents, have a look at the picture in my signature. It cover the area between the rear bumper and the trailer. We toured in Nam for 3 weeks with mostly gravel road driving and no problems. We saw 3 fortuners and a hilux (canopy) without rear windows. I will see if I still have the a better picture of it.

See now that small picture won't help at all. Will look for it and post.

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
I used to cover the rear window of my Combi with cardboard for this.
Never had a broken window.

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
Saw two cars without rear windows in Ai-Ais during our last visit.
Certainly a reality
We have seen the following :
- bracket that bolts onto the tow hitch, arm extends sidewards and two conveyor belt flaps hang behind the tires
- net that extends from the vehicle to the trailer, horizontally. REMEMBER, this must cope with turns ....
- net that covers the front of the trailer ... should be loose enough to absorb the impact of the stones.
- thick rubberising on the front panels of the trailer.
then I have SEEN what MY trailer looked like after a friend used it in Namibia without a net ..... CLEAN, clean down to the bare metal !! sand blasted CLEAN ! Think they used it on long sand stretches ....

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
I hope this helps. It worked well. In picture the cords were still a bit slack but we shortened them a bit and then it was spot on.

Great plan and can also be used as a hammock for swambo to lie on and vent off steam when the attitudes become brittle after many hours of being cooped up.

Neil
I like that plan, did you make it yourself or buy it??
I would maybe make the from 8mm / 10mm elastic for flex and tightness.
@ Thunder02 - any urgent plans to make something like this???

Re: protecting the rear window from stones
I had this one done. BUT Polarbear2008 come up with a cheaper version that works equally well. Take ground sheet (that you use for camping) with the bungee cords woven through the groundsheet holes. use normal diy hooks to attach to the trailer and the off you go. We used 8mm bungee cord if I remember correctly.Dingo wrote:Neil

And there it happens to me
Lost my fortuner back window last weekend at the GTG and it was not even a bad road.
Best way will be like Niel have camping ground sheet with bunge cord

Dirk jammer om te hoor en hoop dat daar nie bakwerk skade is nie. Die ouens in Nam wat ek gesien het nie net die tuna se agter venster verloor nie maar was ook n duik of 2 en n paar chip merke ryker. Sterkte
