2.4 vs 2.8

Post by yotaman »

I have not been very active on the forum for quite a while. Apologies if this topic has already been covered elsewhere. I would appreciate some views on the new 2.4 vs the 2.8 Hilux. Although I understand that the 2.8 is the better vehicle -is it worth the extra moela? I've heard the new 2.4 is almost (if not better) as good as the previous D4D! IT obviously blows the old 2.5 out the water. Grateful,if I could have your expert comments/advice

Soos in NIKS. Daai Lux het stewiger gevoel op daai pad as 'n 200 Cruiser - ek is ernstig.

Ek dink die 2,4 gaan ook baie goeie herverkoop he, net so goed of dalk selfs beter as die 2,8......hy is darem by die R 100 000 goedkoper. Hy is nuut hier by die R 430 000/440 000.

Net in Handrat -

Personally, Off Road the 2.4 is also better, with Low down Torque and a lot more control.
New wide body and Mags -- look good.
Hot and Sweaty -- Nice if you with a Lady---BAD if you in the Jungle.

:mocking:

The 'Wide Body' you guys are referring to.. is it the 2.4 GD-6 4x4 SRX MT?
..and the plain one then the 2.4 GD-6 4x4SR..is this correct?

Shane, please keep us posted on your impressions......I'm particularly interested in

1) RPM in high gear at 120/130
2) KM/litre at those speeds, and town driving

Nice Hilux you got. congrats!!!

No,

AFAIK the SR spec is a mine spec - but is better specced than the SRX, sans radio. Think curtain airbags, etc.

Thanks guys,
Will do Petri, have not done a lot of open road driving so far but what I can say it is way better than a friend's 2.2 Ranger / will keep you posted.

The SR is the plain one (ideal for Famers and Construction) and slightly more expensive because it has 7 A/bags as appose to the SRX's three.

Hi and Thanx guys for the replies!
(Congrats Shane...the new Revo is freakishly beautiful!)

I must admit...I'm bit still confused here.. :eh:

(I have the online Toy comparison, catalogue and brochure open here)
(They all speak same language)

..looking only at the 4x4 2.4 models now.

I can only see 2.
Recommended retail selling $$ difference is R6,300.

The SR..

You have ugly set of wheels and poep (plain) radio..

The SRX..

You have 265/65R17 (As opposed to 225/70R17C) tire on gorgeous looking Alloy rims.
Bluetooth and USB on improved radio setup.
Some external cosmetics.

but..

The SR (plain):

You have:
Hill Assist Control (HAC) std (SRX optional)
Active Traction Control (ATRC) std (SRX optional)
Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) std (SRX optional)
Downhill Assist Control (DAC) std (SRX optional)
Trailer Sway Control (TSC) std (SRX optional)
Curtain airbags std (SRX optional)
Side airbags (front) std (SRX optional)
Emergency Brake Signal std (SRX optional)

Huh ???

The cheaper one the SR.
All other specs the same.. (Dimensions, Capacities, Engine, Drivetrain, Interior, etc...)

Really?
Is this still correct?

I bought the 2.4 and must say it has been an absolute gem. I previously had the 3D4D and the 2.4 in my opinion is very similar but smoother and more refined. I was fortunate enough to have the 2.8 for a week and honestly the extra money is a lot for what you get.

Dirka, I just stopped at Toyota, you're 100% correct.

Guys - is'nt the narrow body 2,4 then also a good option?? I mean, you can always get mags and tyres if it bothers you, and a nice Radio.

OK the SRX has the wide body (wheelarches are wider), and it looks DAMN nice.

But ja..........the SR with all those 4x4 " extras" as standard is also tempting. It also has 4 more airbags than the SRX, but OK that's not really gonna sway me.

Any thoughts??

I got the same reply when making inquiries yesterday.

So far I'm happy with the vehicle. It is surprisingly light on fuel and I enjoy the torque in traffic. Very quiet and relaxing / cant wait to take it out on a long trip and some some off road driving.

Just an interesting article I picked up:

I particularly noted the following:

"Toyota SA also mentioned that it will expand its overall range of vehicles (Hiluxes and Fortuners) equipped with automatic gearboxes and that a number of new vehicles will be launched in early 2017."

..interesting.

For many years the SRX was the "low spec" option, with the RAIDER being the one you had to have ...

I see the full spec bells and wistles RAIDER back in 2017 ...

PLEASE help me here - I'm on the verge of buying a new Hilux DC 4X4, either a 2,8 Raider or a 2,4 SRX (Manual only).

My dealer pal invited me to drive a 2,4 SR to Reitz a while back, and return with a 2,8. The 2,4 was a demo with about 7000km on, the 2,8 was brand new.

The 2,8 is great...nice features etc etc, and it feels a little bit more "driveable" on the open road.

BUT - the 2,4 feels more torqueier from pullaway.

?? Or is it just my imagination??

I love the 2,8's features, but yes - I need to sort of justify that +- R 80 000 price difference. I'm paying cash, and have a sort of a "price allergy".......the SRX is R 428000, the Raider 2,8 is R 507000. That R 80 000 extra is a lot to fork out extra........especially since the 2 engines are VERY VERY similar WRT power and torque.

Thanks!

I just returned from a trip to Mossel bay with my 2.4 GD-6 SRX 4x4 D/C and got an average fuel economy of 7.8 Lt/100km! My friends down there could not believe it when I showed them that I got 7.2lt/100km on the trip down there. I must admit, I'm a very "economical" driver and constantly tried to save fuel in my driving style. Nevertheless, I would not be happy with myself forking out that extra money for a car that is so similar yet so much more thirstier! In my reasoning, it is not worth the extra money and the 2.8 cannot run away from me either!

THANKS yota..........you're busy saving me 80k here.

Apparently the SR also now comes with the Wide Body - that could also be a nice option. The SR "Mine Spec" has 7 airbags, VSC, Tailer Sway Control and Hill Ascent Control "over and above" the SRX. But still steel wheels and no radio.

I can go choose my own radio, and yes - those steelies could actually look cool if you maybe powdercoat them a dark grey (a la split rim grey), chuck that rear bumper and put a nice bumper bar at the back, and a nice alu canopy. Sort of an "overlander look", if you may. With lekker tyres on those 225 steelies.

I drove a 2,4 again yesterday - VERY VERY VERY nice vehicle that!!

Here is exaccetly the diffs between the SR and SRX 2,4:

SRX has side steps, mags, bigger tyres and a fish finder.

SR has none of the above, but "over and above"the SRX has Hill Assist Control, 7 airbags, Traction Control, Trailer Sway Control, Vehicle Stability Control and Downhill Assist Control.

SR is about R 6000 cheaper than the SRX.

Eks nou so deurmekaar ek loop koop sommer 'n Ford :cooldude:

a fish finder. ... uhm ja ... take there is a double din slot, go get your radio of your choice.

The extras of the SRX is cosmetic .... and the 6k will go some way towards a nice radio ...

The extras of the SR - SAFETY .. that is why it is the MINE SPEC ... mines dont care for radios, but safety is not an option.

if I was buying - SR !!!!

A Ford? no please, they just do not last seriously! LOL. I'm not sure if the SR has the same torque (400 Nm) and a 6 speed like the SRX. If it does I'd say, it is a serious contender, 4 sure.

Thanks guys for all the advise.

I pulled the trigger on a 2,8 Manual......at a VERY good price.

Although, must say, it was very very VERY nearly the 2,4 Diesel. GREAT engines!!!

But yes, I need this primarily as a business tool, meaning LOTS of tarmac driving, also in the dark. The 2,8 just makes more sense at this stage......it has this little thingies over and above the 2,4 that I will really need/enjoy over 100 000 km. (this is the tool for ME).

Maar ja - hy is kaalgat so R 84000 cheaper as die Raider.

Die SR is BAIE nice Chris........hy's daai "4x4 only" tipe no frills DC.
Ek like my music KWAAI as ek langpad ry vir werk. So........nice radio is vir my nogal NB.
Speedocruise BAIE nice vir my.

My lorrie is oppad van Witbank af - gaan seker laatmiddag hier wees. Sal hom so Saterdag loop haal.

Die radio be-indruk my !!!!

:surrender:
Not gonna happen.
