Hi All! (SFA with 1KD or 2KD)

Post by Kiru_94 »

I'm new here. I'm from Ethiopia. Although this is a South African group I hope I would be welcome here.

I'm here to do research on engine swaps and seems to be helpful content.
I have an '85 SFA Hilux Single Cab with the 3Y and 4sp manual. It's currently been sitting for a while. The body needs a lot of work due to rust. The Chassis is in a good condition but it too needs work. It has been left stock all it's life.

I don't want to sell or get rid of it so I've been doing some research to do a complete restore and swap the engine. My plan is to build it as a tourer and light to medium 4x4 tracks.
Even though though the Lexus V8 swap is common, It's not going to work for me.

1, Parts are not easily available here
2, As a tourer, I need the fuel economy and diesel is easily available here

I had set my mind on the 1KD or 2KD engines. I haven't been able to find anyone who did this conversion and there is very little content about this build.

Let me know what you think of this :D:

Welcome aboard Kirubel!

Is the KZ or KZTE not perhaps a better motor option?

I have always thought that either the 1kd or 2kd would be an excellent option for the SFA but there are a couple of hurdles which would need to be cleared. The fist is the mating of the engine to the gearbox. I don't know if the kd engines will fit. I do know that there is a large amount of commonality between the KZTE and the KD. They use the same water pumps and cam belt etc. so there may be a fair chance that the kd engine will fit on a KZTE gearbox but this is by no means a safe assumption. More so with the SFA. The second issue to remember is that both these engine ranges have electronic engine management which is integrated into systems such as the 4x4, the brakes (ABS) and security systems. You would need to make sure that you get the engine management systems as well.

Welcome!

You're biggest challenge with the KD family of engines will be the electronics. Even in South Africa there are very few people that could get a KD engine working in anything else but the original vehicle.

Maybe look at a 2CT or 2LT engine?

I haven't done engine conversions and i'm also gonna let a workshop handle the conversion I'm planning so forgive me if my questions are ridiculously wrong. I was gonna replace the current 4sp manual with a recent 5sp manual.
I wouldn't purchase a KD engine without the ECU and harness.
But If I have the correct gearbox and wiring harness is there a chance I would get it working?
The reason I don't want to go with the KZTE engine is my friends don't have a good experience with them and it will be difficult to find one in a good condition. But I'm certain that I will find a KD in a good condition.

If you have a mechanic who knows his business and a complete harness then there is a good likelihood that he will be able to get it going. The principle is no different from installing a Lexus V8 using the original ecu etc. If you can get the engine and gearbox combination then that would be the first prize. It is much easier to get gear levers and propshafts sorted than to source a suitable bell housing etc for your old box.

There are some excellent workshops in my area. I've seen some of the restorations they do. A particular workshop caught my eye with an awesome FJ40 they built with a 4.2 straight 6  . I'm confident they are capable of doing the job.
I wanted the D4D with it's gear box to make it easy to source parts. It is going to be an expensive build but the results will make up for it.
And I think the SFA will be epic with a D4D in it.
