Toyota Hilux 3.0 Auto (wobble) Solved

Post by Punishing_Steel »

Hi guys, Im new to the forum and would like to post this as an introduction / question on the forum.

I have a gentle rattle / vibration / wobble when I pull away with my 3.0 Auto Hilux 2010 model, 160k on the clock. The wobble is new and its not my tyres... checked alignment and balancing... tyres are new BFG 265/70/R17 AT KO2.

Im was under the bakkie today today, Im no mechanic, but everything looks and feels tight on the props shaft, not sure if this might be engine brackets or something...

The wobble is quite annoying and is only noticed between 30 - 70kmph and goes away...

Die ding maak my mal!!! Please help

Welcome Jan!

Is the vibration there irrespective of whether you are accelerating, cruising or decelerating? It could be a difficult thing to diagnose from a distance and could be a host of probable causes, but since you have already checked wheel alignment and balancing (did they check for a buckled rim?), I would look at the next probability which would be the condition of the centre carrier bearing on the prop and then the balancing of the prop-shaft itself (both can be done at the same time). Then I would have the engine and gearbox mounts checked out properly.

Hope you get to the bottom of it sooner than later. :winkx:
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks for the reply Mud Dog, I have noticed that if a take my foot off the accelerator the wobble goes away... and comes back if I am in the 30-60 kmph zone. So when I decelerate from 100 down to a stop there is no wobble...

hi.
when you are driving do you hear a different tone coming from the tires, difficult to explain the noise, sounds like bass speaker making a whon whon noise. if so that would give you an indication that you may have flat spot on the tires. not sure on how old your tires are. Did you see the tires spinning when you had them balanced to see if there is a wobble from the rim or tyre looking from the front and side? a quick way to check if it is your tires, find a mate and swap tires with him and see if there is a difference.
Check your shocks.
check you gearbox and engine mountings, if you have a Manual , put it in first gear, and do some hard acceleration and deceleration and hear if you have a knocking noise or if some feels loose.
have you checked your steering checked for any play?
lastly , check your prop shaft, the knuckles and center bearing.
hope this helps.

Morning. I had a D4D Automatic 130 000km. My vibration was on 90- 100km/h. I had do tyres, chocks, propchaft.
When I change my rear brakes and skim the drums the vibration was gone. Hope that this can help you to.

Thanks Hannes, the vibrations is only when I accelerate, and not when breaking... when I take my foot of the accelerator it goes away... but comes back when I put my foot down... just till 80km/h and then disappears... I have 4 new BFG’s on...

Howzit and welcome Jan.I had a similar problem on my wifes mercedes about two years ago.I also had fitted new tyres to the car.The car developed a vibration at about 100km/h and diminished at about 120 km/h.

I had the driveshaft checked and all was in order. The wheels were taken in for rebalancing as the Eastern Cape roads are in a very bad state .One of the new tyres was found to be almost in balance, but had signes of seperation on the tread.
I replaced the faulty tyre and the problem was solved.
I thought I should mention this as the faulty tyre was still balaced.

If it only appears when you are accelerating then I would also think it is propshaft related.

I am thinking its the center bearing on the propshaft, you won't really see anything wrong on visual inspection.

I see you are in Kempton, take the vehicle to Patterson Propshafts, on Pretoria road, and ask them to inspect. Kempton Toyota use them to refurbish propshafts for them.

Otherwise take it to Toyota Kempton and speak to Arno, Service Foreman / Specialist

Guys, it was the back universal on the props shaft that was finished... got it replaced with the other 2 and also did the centre bearings... cost me R2000. Wobble gone and drives like a dream again!
