Hi Guys,
So I decided to check my valves on my new to me (18 year old) 2.7 3rz Dual Cab as I doubt they had been checked / adjusted before. There was a fair amount of carbon / gunk on the cover and the spark.plug oil seals were crumbly. That being saidnthe timing chain and everything else looks solid.
Exhaust range .25 - .35
Intake range .15 - .25
Below are my results

As you can see 3 exhaust valves are too tight and 4 are at .25. the intake valves are all within spec.
I have mucked around with the painful shim removal tool and was able to remove the exhaust shims from 1-3 however the furthest back (.254) I just cannot remove. I don't particularly want to remove.the exhaust cam so i am curious to see if you think I'd be okay to leave the furthest one back at .254 while adjusting the all the other to be around .30?
Appreciate any advice!

Were those specs for hot or cold?
If the specs given were for hot and checked when hot, them it's still within spec and I would leave it. I would also tend to lean more to the tighter clearance with an old motor since there could be a little hollow wearing on the rockers, unless you measured the clearance at the cam.

Thanks for the reply mud dog ☺ Measured the clearances cold using a feeler gauges under the individual cam lobes as per the FSM. I thought the 3rz was prone to burnt exhaust valves?

First time I hear of that.I thought the 3rz was prone to burnt exhaust valves?
Those engines easily runs 500k km without being opened.

You should be OK if that's what the manual says. Also haven't heard of the 3RZ being prone to burning valves. As Pieter indicated, these are very robust, reliable and trouble free motors

How interesting! All the Tacoma forums in the states have the 3rz and they all mention how important it is, should I even bother adjusting g the ones that are .005mm too tight?
