Proportional Brake Distrubution valve - Help

Post by frik »

Jees before you get a freight I am not sure if this is what you call it . One of our forum members visited me on Saturday and he mentioned something that really baffles my mind.

On the back axle of the KZ there is a funny thingy which is connected to the body with a lever (Will take a photo tonight)
the other side is linked to the brake system.
What I was told id this acts or compensate if your bin is loaded or not thus applying more or less rear brakes.

My question I have done a Ironman suspension lift and I cannot remember Hi Q saying or doing anything on this thingy to compensate for the 50mm lift.
I must admit since I did the mod my brakes were bollie as I fitted powerbrakes at the front but still the brakes are not what they should be.

Is this possibly the cause for my poor braking performance?

Help please

Frik, as far as I know they sharpen the brakes, the more you load as the back end pushes down, so with the lift you will have to make the arm longer, maybe just by adjusting it. but if the lift is further than what it can be adjusted, you will have to make an extention.

Frik. As jy raised suspension het moet daai outjie verseker gestel word. Mens roep die load balancing valve (ek dink).

Dit is maar 'n geval van adjust en toets. In sekere gevalle sal jy actually daai armpie moet langer maak. Elke keer wat jy hom stel wil jy hom toets want jy wil nie 'n geval kry waar jou agterwiele lock voor jou voorwiele lock nie

Toe ek en Cassie by Eric was het on bulldog sin gedoen in 'n paar minute.

Dit alles het so 3-4 tries gevat.

Ek sien by Proporsional valve is tot heelbo geskuif. Dink dis tyd om bietjie te kyk om die valve af te bring sodat die wiele weer kan rem, want hy is lui om te stop....

Re: Proportional Brake Distrubution valve - Help

Post by pietpetoors »

I adjusted my bakkie's brake distribution whatever valve as well today. But while doing it I gave it some thought.

The purpose of this valve is to get more braking power on the rear brakes when the vehicle is loaded. This make sense especially in heavy and articulated vehicles.

But my concerns are:
1. A double cab's ass easily hangs when loaded because you load everything behind the rear axle. So if you load 500Kg on a double cab it will hang the same as a single cab with 1200Kg on its back. So obviously this valve will not adjust the brakes correctly on a double cab.

2. If your van's springs are shot the ass will hang as well telling the valve that it is loaded all the time and you will have more braking power at the back than usual. If you lift the vehicle or reset the springs a bit more than standard it actually becomes a bit dangerous because you might end up with no brakes at the back.

Especially on a double cab is it not better then to have no brake distribution valve at all and always have the same amount of brakes at the back? Does this thing really have a purpose on a double cab?

Pieter. THis is just a guess but the valve on the double cab is probably not the same as the one the single cab. But beside this, you don't want to remove it all together. You rather want less brakes on the rear than in front and not vice versa. Because you don't want the rear wheels to lock up before the front wheels. This will induce a side ways slide which is much more difficult to control than having the front wheels lock and sliding in a straight line. m2cw

Cassie, if it is not there at all the master cylinder will anyway do either a 50/50 split or 40% rear and 60% front.
Cars and some bakkies do not have the valve and they manage without it.

You also do not want too much brakes on the front because then your front wheels will lock very easily even with the mildest application.

Your front wheels would not lock too fast but your van's overall braking effort seriously gets influenced negatively if the rears does not do their job properly and your front disks and pads will not last as long as it is supposed to. This valve works really well if it is set up properly, but you are right many people do not keep it in mind when the lift their suspension or reset their blades and thus you do not have proper brakes in the rear.

If you adjust your brakes without this valve to be working good and you hook a trailer you will not have the extra stopping power in the back that you would require and the same is true with a load.

Keep your valve, adjust it properly and your brakes will be fine.
