I just bought one, so can't comment on durability. Fuel usage 9 to 11km/l, depends We have 3 srx's 2x4 on site and they doing fine.
In heavy sand the hi-range seems to be useless, but if you can let the turbo run it might be fine in 1st gear.
The shocks doesn't coupe with cattle spoors in a sand tracks, so better shock is a must off road I would say. For the rest I am satisfied on and off road. The next thing that will go on my bakkie is the rear bumper, already bent in a short down slope.
Haven't load a 1 ton on it yet, thats the next test. :D:

As ek karavaan sleep is die brandsrof verbruik so 9.3 km/lit.

I havent got a 2.5 butt a 3.0 D4D. This is my no. 6 Toyota D/C from a 2.2 - 3.0 D4D. I have done +/- 200000 km on each and towing a 2.2 ton Boat to Moz and back 4 times a year and work beach with it and all.
Work wise all was fine and never gave me one bit of trouble accept my latest 3.0 D4D with 130000 km.
Clutch Master Cylinder packed up.
Aircon Compressor packed up.
Turbow packed up.
TJM Shock broke of and never been on a dirt road accept beach and was fitted for hight only.
Not very reliable for a top of range 4x4.

Hi, BPK,

OOOMS was daar al 'n SRX dag ?

johan it's interesting you should mention they struglle in the sand.
one of the recent episodes of 'Voetspore' they went playing in the Nam dunes.
They report that the diesels struggled a bit in the sand.
I was quite surprised - I thought the Land cruiser was the king of Nam dunes.

Or is it purely a case of diesels just don't cut it in the sand.
I remeber test driving a 1999 3000D non-turbo before I bought the 2.2.
The owner's wife told me her husband would often complain that he could not play with when they went to Nam.

Both the 2.5 and 3000D appeals to me for the fuel efficiency, but if they no good in the sand, then I'll stick to my petrol engines - besides - like Bennie mentioned before, the maintenance costs on diesels outweigh the savings on fuel costs

Diesels may struggle inamib sand as they do not have the range of revs (6000+) that the petrols do. So you have to change gears sooner and in sand a gearchange is a stopper. Then again the new diesels with their intercoolers just have so much more torque that it should be a pleasure in the dunes. I've only experienced a normal diesel and a petrol in the sand.

The 3.0 l have enough torque and Kw for the sand. Only the 2.5 is a bit under power, so is the 4.2d LC, but the 4.2td LC is not bad again. Petrol engines have a longer rev range, so it does better as you change gears less. Thats where the diesel have the disadvantage. If you change gears up the dune you stuck.
