extra tanks .... info needed

Post by ChrisF »

Time to start kitting out Elders.

"Elders" is a 2,5 D-4D SC Hilux, 2010 model.

I have more ideas for this than experience ... To avoid some very expensive school fees your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Tanks - Water and extra diesel tank

The idea is to install a long range diesel tank:
- what are the main benefits of a "spare wheel mounted" tank vs a tank installed inside the bak? (Elders will be used for 4x4 only, no need to strip it out to cart garden rubbish)
- any other ideas regarding long range fuel tanks? ie size, position, etc ....
- SS tank or plastic tank ?

Water tank:
- the idea is to mount it in the front of the bak, under the bed.
- size (capacity) ?? {we are two people that will primarily do long weekend trips, with the occational longer trip into remote areas}
- plastic or SS tank ?
- any other tips or ideas ?

Hy stamp gladnie as ons veld of baan ry nie.

Minder moeite.

Water tank 60l oppi dak, gravity feed vir shower en voete was. Tap sommer rivier water in (hou drinkwater apart)

Drinkwater in aparte plastiek tank

Hi Chris

Here's my 2c worth, from experience it's better to fit your fuel tank under the bin to avoid taxes if crossing over to other countries e.g. Lesotho because I go there often, and there's always an officer wanting to know if there's fuel in my jerry cans, from their point of view I'm then importing fuel into their country.

Thanks again for the advice, so here is what I did.

Opted for TWO plastic water tanks. A 120 liter and another 40 liter.
Idea being - if I end in a situation where I need to top up from a river, the "clean" water to be kept in the 40 liter and the new water in the 120 liter. This should really be more than enough for a fair number of days away from facilities.

For the diesel I opted for 2 jerry cans.

These options allow me the versatility to select the tanks as per the trip we are doing. For instance, NO use loading (filling) the 120 tank if we are going to a SANS park with full facilities.

Only time will tell if these desicions were the correct ones for our purposes. At least there was some reasoning behind it.

Now to find the best layout for everything inside Elders. :)

Walking to the garage every 15 minutes, move two items around, purve, and then repeat this 15 minutes later ... :)
