Saddle correction a la Stef

Post by Stef »

Decided it is high time to add my extra blades in the front and do the saddle (pedestal for Andy :mocking: ) correction at the same time.
Contemplating the 30mm axle move while I have the diff out

Diff almost out...

diff out:

Note on the saddles; try hitting it from the inside out with a ball pin hammer and a 4 pounder before panelbeating from the top; saves a lot of time.
Used a 2nd cut file to mark/smooth out the high spots after the beating:

one pack (back one in pic) washed & re-assembled with the 6th blade in position #3:

 .... this is actually the correct term. A saddle is normally something that bolts down over the top of something like a tube to hold it in place. ;-) :D:

.... and ja, do the axle move while you're about it.

I know about saddles...qualified sparky (before I went the light current route) :mocking:

Guess it depends on one's point of view...the pedestal is over the diff...and holding it down (with some help from the leafs) therefor it must be a saddle :laugh2: Oh, it is bolted down as well

Always know it to be referred to as the spring pedestals, even spring perches ... but I'm slowly getting used to the saddle term. ;-) Wonder what reference is made in the Haynes manual.

Stef an easier option would have been to buy new saddles and replace them.

I believe that a properly penetrating arc weld will do the trick here. I think the biggest hassle you might have is oxidisation in the weld (no gas blanket). Perhaps some rust inhibitor or cold galvanising on the 'heat' areas before painting. ;-)

My thoughts as well so that's what I did; Inverter set at 90A with a 2mm rod. I little high for 2mm but wanted proper pentration on the thik plates.
Gave the diff a once over with the grinder & wire brush last night. Today I'm cleaning up the hard to reach places before giving it some reddish (PA10 or the like) primer with a black QD enamel for a second coat.

Couldn't wait for Saturday morning...just under 2 hours & the diff was back in; 30mm axle move also done

MASSIVE improvement :dance1:

Driver side = 40mm up; total 805mm bottom of rim to wheel arch
Passenger side = 30mm up; total 830mm

Noticed a 15mm difference between rear L/R; trim packer in the rear R ought to sort it out

Tx Louis; been meaning to contact you....I reckon a 10mm trim in the rear right will sort the front as well, but will drive it first, just need to get longer brake lines first due to axle move.

What sizes are trim packers available in?

Finally got the extended brake line for the passenger side (supplier ran out of teflon hose)...bled the brakes and took it for a spin. Steering etc seems to be fine after the diff move.

Took some measurements afterwards; now have 30mm difference between left & right sides both in the front & rear; guess I'll drive it a bit more (only did 4km's last night) & see where they sit then  Maybe I ought to rip out the rear leafs & service them as well?
