I imagine the idea would be to leave her in the pot with the red wine until well pickled (not easy to escape from that pot unassisted, and if the wine is in abundance the desire to leave the pot will be minimised anyway). I further suspect that one would have to be in attendance to offer support and to carefully monitor the pickling process so that it's just right .... not under nor over pickled. I suppose then would be the time to bring on the spices, of which charm would not be the least ....
