Ammo Box Camp Light
I was looking forward to getting home and starting this small project.
Thanks to Heinrich Traveler for the Ammo Boxes and Piet Petoors for the nice goodies that went inside the box.
This project was fairly simple and straight forward but still practical.
As so many people have made Ammo Box Lights before I had to make myne unique and the main idea was to mount a all round camp light in such a way that I don't need a tree or something high to hang it from, the light should also be high enough so that it does not blind anyone.
The third important feature was that the whole kit should fit inside the Ammo Box.
Lastly an extra feature was to make it remotely operated for those moments where you're already tucked in in your RTT but forgot to switch off the camp light.
Step 1
Sourcing two 7.5ah Lead Acid Sealed Batteries, installing it inside the box, wire it up (parralel for 12V 15ah supply)
Connecting this to the mounted Hella socket.
Step 2
This is where I got the great idea of using an old bow tent pole to mount the light high enough with.
I've cut all the section to length so that it would fit inside the Ammo box, then inserted the thin electrical cable and elastic rope. Connected the LED strip to the top end and the Hella plug to the bottom end of the cable.
Step 3
Then I used one of Piet's Remotely Operated LED Switch/Dimmer to control the switching of the LED strip via Remote Control.
The dimming function also works very nice.
Step 4
Lastly I manufactured a clip-on Stainless Steel bracket to mount the light pole onto the box.
This mounting easily clips off and fits inside the box together with the batteries, light switch/dimmer and folded light mounting pole.
Step 5
Still to come, I will find a way to to fit the 10W 750Lm Spot light so that the box can also be used as a powerful torch.
I did not include a 220V charger as originally planned but for now I will charge it off my Hilux main battery and if needed I'll use my Benton to charge it off 220V power.
The Picks.
Total Cost:
- Ammo Box R75
- 2 x 7.5ah Batteries R300
- 1 Remote Switch/Dimmer R90
- 1m High Bright LED Strip R150
- 2 Hella Plugs R100
- Wire (had it in garage)
- Tent Pole (had it in garage)
Total = R715

Nice idea Johannes ..... now you will have to incorporate a couple of guy-ropes for that mast in the windy west coast!

I bought 4 of those boxes & have had the same idea for two of them but using a telescopic pole. Been racking my brains to find one but never considered the tent pole!!!
If there's no copyright on it I'll do the same.
How do you mount the extended pole on the top of the box?

I made a small clip on Stainless bracket that sits on the box lid, the pole slides over the pin and it's quite sturdy.

Re: Ammo Box Camp Light
Very nice light dude in terms of the reflector - what about cutting two coke tins in half lengthways, glue the inverted lids together. Then you have a lekka reflective surface, which is also very "light"
Q20 if its stuck, duct tape if it moves

Re: Ammo Box Camp Light
Maybe it is a good idea to send the Cape boxes to one address and distribute from there. Courier for one box will be about R120.00 but courier for 20 will be about R400.00
Makes a small difference.
