Khaudum Kaskenades

Post by ThysdJ »

Who has been to Khaudum lately? Please tell me more about campsites, facilities, distances (time to cover) between camp sites etc.

We will be coming up along the Nam/Bots border from Koes, will we get to Tsumkwe in one day or do we need to stay over along the way?

We are planning to do this in Aug/Sept.

Any info will be welcome..

Hi Thys

On the C44 from Grootfontein to Tsumkwe there is a Vet's Fence. Can we take meat thru that checkpoint if we travel in an easterly direction?

Thanks Hennie for the pics, they are awesome..

Thys, I only know about a veterinarian check point (Mururani Gate) on the road between Grotfontein and Rundu (B8), but it's unfortunately been 3 years since I last traveled on the C44. At Mururani you are not allowed to take home made red meat from north to south (may be the same other way round, depending on the location of diseases). I would not carry any home made red meat, only vacuum packed, Namibian purchased meat. Unfortunately the officials seem to make the rules up as they go along, so today you might be fine, tomorrow might be different.

Thys, we had a lot of meat with us and they did not want to let us through - even though we had a letter from the tourism board stating that we could. It ended up with a phone call to the head of the veterinary department and a lot of sweet talking to let us through. It seems they would allow meat purchased in one of the well known supermarkets in Namibia. Will also send you a pm.

Last year on our trip to Kaokoland, there was no problem taking meat from the south to the north at Palmwag. But we had a problem coming back near Opuwo. The vet's fence is there to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease from the north to the south... In this case we will be traveling into the F&M area...

I know the guys at the checkpoints are very unpredictable, but it is good to know what they are supposed to.. I just hand out Hilux4x4 pens as I go along.....

Ek wonder of sy moordenaars toe ooit opgespoor is?

Ek sal mooi moet beplan rondom diesel.

By Divundu behoort jy weer diesel te kry as jy Kaprivi toe draai.

Slegs 20l saam gery ingeval.

Thanks Johan, at least one Namibian that knows his own country

I have only been up to Tsumkwe and the area to the south and south-west of Tsumkwe (Gam, Epukiros etc.) on work related travels. Not sure though where this vet post popped up on the C44, as mentioned I didn't go through such a post back then.

Anyway the Park must be amazing from what I've seen (in books and on the web only, so far) and heard; the area below the Park is also a beautiful part of our country, but then 99% of our country is beautiful :cooldude: Exception being the freaking mines shooting out of the ground everywhere :frustrated:

Kaudom is on my to-do list, will be following this threat closely.

Maak voorsorg soos nette , vlieplakke, ens., as jy by Sekireti kamp. Daai elektrise rakket werk soos n bom. Khaudum kamp is nie n probleem.

Is daar diesel by Tsumkwe?

Will keep you posted, but on 21/22 Sept, I believe we'll still be on the road...

Gobabis tot by Drimiopsis is teerpad.
