Jeep Guy Needs Advice From Hilux Guys??
Dec on the way back home, about 2km before home, we got stuck in a traffic jam after a trip of around 1800km
jeep started getting hot, and when it got to 3/4, pulled onto the pavement and checked every thing, started up again, saw and heard the fan coming on and temp dropped to normal
have been keeping an eye on it and nothing till last weekend
found a little bit of like a gravy on the radiator cap, nothing on the dip stick
however on oil filler cap found some moisture, and inside the oil filler neck, there is some contraption, and on the inside of that found the Mayonnaise/yogurt what ever you wish to call it!!!
so this now changes the mid year getaway, and am in no rush!! we now going with out towing all the toys along
vehicle still runs fine, however dont want to run it and create extra problems
yep gaskets go that easy on these motors, its their weak point, on an other wise very efficient cooling system, even when towing or soft sand playing
suspect an aging thermostat, that was starting to stick
so now!!!
option 1
do just the top
recon the heads, do every thing possible on the top, close it up again, as the valve stem seals were a problem, however the bottom seemed in pretty great shape, with no noises and running smoothly and NO oily plugs
option 2
pull the motor, a lot of extra work, as it comes out with the box and transfer case
pull every thing apart
do rings or even new pistons bearings and oil pump and then its like a new engine
option 3
do the whole motor as option 2
get the HO heads, cams, inlet manifold and throttle body, good for 35hp
together with the other goodies already on the vehicle
should take from the original 265hp to around 350+hp
already have the supperchip that remaps, and full exhaust has already been done, branches and exhaust!! and filter
so already past the stock 265hp, however not 350 yet!!
with 350hp, should be able to recover two hilux at once!!
why the extra power???
1 couz its nice
2 we tow
know that I will get good advice here!!
all advice welcome

kilos on this motor ??
does it use water now ?? I wont touch the top if it is not using motor .... (still see my final comment)
IF you do the top only - CHECK/replace the thermostat and fan temp sensor .... viscous fan?? - REPLACE
the real question is WHY did it get hot ??? The fan should have prevented that .....

Re: Jeep Guy Needs Advice From Hilux Guys??
True milage, unknown, as all the electronicswere replaced or tampered with, was aware of the situation when buying
Milage is storred in3 different computers, ECU , abs and the cluster, all electronic, and they all corespond with low millage from the time of replacing
Have needed to top up the resouvoir bottle twice this year
The fan is driven off the power steering pump, the ECU controls the fan via a solinoid
My understanding is tnat the temp sensor for the gauge is the same sesor where the ECU get info from
Reason for overheating??
The main suspect is a thermostats that is starting to go
Why was it not replaced as precaution??
Wasent sure that it was actually overheating, or a false reading, couz temp came down veryquick back to normal, and hoses felt normal temp
Now believe it did get a little hot

Went down that road a few months agoModder Tekkies wrote:OPTION 4:

Even went to the dealer
We looked at hilux, tuna and prado
Every one at home was up in arms when the suggestions that the jeep goes
Andthe V8 is just great to drive
And a soft ride
So that option went out the window

Budget dictates the decision.
If a bit tight, option 1 with maybe a flow.
IF money is no object AND you plan to keep it for a few years still, numer 3 will get my vote!

While you at it, do the whole thing... option 3 if you can afford it.. Option 1 if you want to sell it sometime soon...

Is your GC the WJ or WK?
If your family love the vehicle that much and you will keep it for a long time, why not look at fitting the 5.7L, you can import for $2995 usd (exchange rate not in your favour at the moment) with 3 year warranty.
Search: SWengines - $2995.00 (Grade A Used Engine) 3 Year Parts and labor warranty included
Also look at http://johannesburg.olx.co.za/hemi-5-7l ... -524910958 for R30k, but I would negotiate that price at 127 000km
5.7L = 250KW / 500NM

Re: Jeep Guy Needs Advice From Hilux Guys??
Thanx guys for the replies
We came to the following conclusion
Jeep is paid for
A new one, V8 limited is 640k
Ours is paid for, if we spend 110k over aperiod of time, its way cheaper then buying a new one
Reason why the 5.7 hemi wont work, is it dosent fit without major surgery to the frame. Only one or two done around the world, couz of the complications
Have done gearbox converions, will complete the lexus V8 into my bakkie one, however cutting and rebuilding the frame on the jeep is beyond my equipment and maybe skils
Money is not unlimited, however over a period of a few months it can get done
As for4 the hilux, wife like the Prado, and for that money we can get a V8 jeep also
Hilux will come when we go on pension
Looks like option 3 is prefered

If you are planning on driving the jeep like forever fix it properly, or buy something else more reliable.
