Toyota Cressida 2,4 (petrol)

Post by Harold »

I have a chance of buying a 1986 Toyota Cressida (manual). It has done 213000km.
Overall condition fair, still in daily use.
What interest me is the engine, seems identical to that of my 1987 and 1998 4x4 Hilux’s.
Only difference I can see is that it has a distributor ignition system.
Could be a good buy?

Any comments on this model? Fuel consumption, common, problems, etc.

What would be the going price?

Fuel consumption was about 10km/l , they were not very economical.
Same engine as the Hilux
Even the same problem of battling to start when hot.

The Cressida had a 21R(2litre) or 22R (2.4) engine, they were almost identical to the Hilux except for tuning and small variations, the hard starting when hot can be solved by dropping the float level, they were good cars and the station wagons were popular for Hearses.

My dad had two of those 2.4 Cresidas, it was a 22R, it wasn't a 2 litre.

They first came out with a fine grill and then there was a facelift later on.

With the first 2.4 they had a problem with the diff because they used the 2 litre diff which could not handle the extra torque.
My Dad's first one had a diff replacement on 12,000 km on the clock.

80Kw and 186Nm

Same engine as the Hilux

Had the 2.4P Hilux which was an excellent vehicle, but not for towing or in a hurry on uphills.
In the hills of the Eastern Cape vI averaged about 6.5 km/l driving conservately.
Bots/Nam could get 7.5 km/l driving conservately.
Sweet spot 105 km/h at about 3100 r/p/m.
1986 must have been 21R 2000
I think the 2.4P came out about 1993/1994.

The 21R engine was produces from 1978 to 1987 and the 22R was produces from 1981 to 1997
