new chinese 4y or low km 7m gte ?
Hi guy’s im rebuilding my lux top to bottom at the moment just have a rolling chasi. But IV hit a road block the old 4y motor needs lots of work. to the extent that it will be cheaper to put in one of those new Chinese motors but I also want more power as ill be towing quads .it got me thinking what needs to be changed other than the engine mounts and radiator to fit a 7m gte ? forget all the small thinds like pipes ! Does gearing need to be changed? And what other problems come with fitting a 7m gte or should I just fit a fong-kong 4y please help guys
Re: new chinese 4y or low km 7m gte ?
Your Dilemma can be simplified to:
Value for Money + Reliability = Korean 4Y
Above + Amazing Performance = 4Y with BFi
OR:
Expensive High Maintenance Tinkering Toy = 7MGE

Hi jontheron go 2.7i it simply slots into the origional engine mounts and tough as nails with alot more power than the 2.2,is as if not more powerfull than a 3litre ford v6 and lighter.
With each replacement of parts, a car slowly becomes Chinese.

Jonathan, changing to another engine, ie NOT 4Y is a very involved process. I'm busy changing my 4Y to a Lexus V8 and can tell you you need the following:
1. New engine
2. New engine mountings
3. Radiator
4. New Engine Management System
5. Bellhousing
6. New flywheel
7. Propshafts will need some work
8. Modify wiring harness
These are just the "big" things and a lot of other small stuff has to be done. Be careful of the 7mgTe (turbo charged) as it has too much power to harness for offroad driving. Ewald Croozer here had one and sold it due to this problem. Rather go for the 7mge (normally aspirated), Lexus V8 or EFI as it is much better suited to offroad driving. But if you want a street racer 7mgte will do just fine...

Jonathon
I'm in the same boat as you
(except I've got BFi)
I looked at (and drove two) 2.7i's.
One was standard the other was Go-tech Efi
I ruled them out cos of the high cost of the 2.7i Motor.
The 4Y with BFi is within a few horses of the 2.7i so in my mind there's no contest.
I'm picking up a 4YP tomorrow; Price R4,750.00
Can't beat that hey.
There are several Forum guys with these motors, 3 have BFi Mods on them.
No doubt they'll post tomorrow.
Hope this helps!

Re: new chinese 4y or low km 7m gte ?
Firstly I would rebuild and rework the std genuine 4y motor even if it costs three times as much as the taiwan 4y.
The 2.7 i may cost much more than a 7mge to buy, but the total instalation cost is cheaper, believe it or not, and it's a low maintenance reliable package.
The 7mgte doesn't work, i've tried it, to much power at the wrong time for to little rpm, way to heavy on fuel and breaks everything.
The lexus is an expensive high maintenance option, but take it out and push it to the limit it's worth every cent!

It was not so long ago that even the most well informed mechanics were saying:
"Toyota??? - No Man that's Jap Crap!!!! - Vauxhall, Ford, Chevy only way to go"
Remember Jonathon these Motors are serious threats to Mechanics hey, these Motors take bread off their tables
Also please consider that once the taxi industry is sorted these motors will become scarce and very pricey

Yep Oom Eric,
My Korean Lady fired up first time and sang sweetly to me
We only took her for a 3km test drive but she's got lots of torque and puurs like a kitten
We're taking her out again just now
which reminds me, Note to myself:
Go buy 3 more tins of Ford Mettalic Blue Engine Paint
