2.5 sand / tow capabilities??

Post by dalkill »

whenever i'm looking at bakkies I always look at the possibility to towing.
I love fishing, and love camping so the natural choice would be to buy caravan as well so the family can go with.
Summer tent is OK, but winter ... eish. And camping place is more readily available than chalets especially during Easter weekends.

SO i been looking :
colt 2.8. 280nm, currently going for about R60 - R80K.
3.0 d4d - 343nm - seen 2006 one for R140K last month but still thought too much if was scam. Normally goes for about R180K+
2.5 d4d - 260nm - about R160K+

I was convince 2.8 is the way to go, but then my buddie tells me over the weekend how his 2.8 colt struggled thru the thick sand while 3.0 d4d guys breezed thru it. so now my head spinning again.

I would like d4d. More than enough power for all occasions. But the price tag. So other option is 2.5. At 260nm, how well does it perform towing. I have family of 5, so i need a 5 / 6 sleeper caravan. And this is ussualy big and heavy.
Then there is the sand. Normal flat sand I think it should be fine, but it's the tricky bush sand tracks, where you come around a hill , and you looking at 45 deg angle, rutted sand track, with no momentum. :slap:

will the 2.5 make the grade for what my needs are?

I am afraid the 2.5 would not be a great towing vehicle.

Ja Mr_B... that was the other option thrown around on Sun morning 3am waiting for the fish to bite.
Guys mentioned in those thick sand situations you want petrol vehicle, as generally TD's don't like it.

In fact my buddie was overberg weekend before last, no doubt doing some bush driving, and on his way back, his friend blew radiator and puff of white smoke... 2.8 motor shot. buddie had to tow his friend , both heavy laden with families and gear , with his 2.8 pajero :wth: . Just hope he didn't hurt his engine as well. Maybe it could have been due to sand driving radiator gave in, or just dud radiator, as he replaced it recently at Silverton. And just to say bigup to Silverton who is footing the bill for his repairs as it was consequence of the product they installed. Not often you get after sale service like that anymore.

SO, V6 is not out of the equation either... eish just the fuel consumption. Check this:

Post number 25 :wth: :wth:

7 - 8km / l i can live with, but 5... that 2.2 levels. I really don't to go back to those dark days, seeing the temp guage and fuel gauge move in syncro in opposite directions.

with diesel DO make sure you have an intercooler - the 2,5 does not come standard with it.

an EGT gauge is a very handy investment - especially if you are going to work the diesel HARD.

Often gearing back to fourth gear and slowing down 5 or 10km/h does the job and the diesel runs fine ... without the EGT gauge it is always a guessing game as to when this is needed.

Isooz is a lot of car for the money. Compare a 2008 D4D with it...and suddenly the Isooz is a bargain!

I've pulled a heavy laden motorcycle trailer (approx 1ton) to Lesotho with the 3l dteq and it pulls very strong. I'd just be hesitant to buy a turbo diesel from someone I don't know.

it was from toyota dealer in boksburg so i would have felt a bit more comfortable.

Alas, it been sold already. 3 hrs on gumtree... gone !!

maybe i'm destined to wait for that good deal on d4d. My heart yearns for 3.0 but eish.. they bit out of my price range.

when I bought in 2010 the price difference between the 2,5 and the 3,0 was about R42k ..... it is SCARY just how quickly the bumpers, Iron man suspension, etc flew past that figure .....

I REALLY should have bought the 3,0 and waited a bit for those extras !!

That 2.5 dfd engine lasts , nothing wrong with it, just don't try to over take slower moving vehicles, it takes to long.

Would have love the higher kw engine from the Fortuner in it, then I might have not sold the 2.5 that I had so early.
