is it possible to remove the right (or left) front side shaft and drive the vehicle ?

Have you broken one? You'll have to remove the shaft and disassemble it so you can put the ends back in, one in the diff and one in the wheel hub. The wheel one need to be there or the wheel bearing and wheel will fall apart.

It actually all depends on the type of diff you have. On a full floating axle you can pull the side shaft and if you have a diff lock you can keep on driving if you plug the hole to keep the oil in the diff. The bearings remain in place and are not depend on the side shaft being there. On a semi floating axle the side shaft has to be there.

On the SFA? Yes you can. Side shafts is enclosed completely. If you assemble just make sure you get the wheel bearings fastened correct.

It's a 2012 model, so not SFA. If it were SFA you wouldn't have to remove the shaft anyway - just keep hubs and transfer box disengaged.

Sorry i was refering to the rear diff, was not paying attention!

would you have to remove it on an IFS ?

or can you just move the short stick to 2H ?



PS - have seen a gent strip a rear side shaft on a Landy. Removed the inner part, think he had to leave the outer part to seal the shaft and hold the bearing etc. Put it in 4H, drove it back over 300km in what was effectively front wheel drive.

On the older IFS models that still had hub locks you could leave it the same way you would with a SFA, but on the newer D4D models you have a problem - no hub locks to disengage. The diff is disengaged by the ADD unit (Auto Diff De-coupler), which means that the side shafts are permanently connected. If you snap one you would have to remove at least the side connected to the wheel - if you don't have far to go you could stabilise it with some stiff wire or the like and drive slowly.

I'm not sure of the CV assembly setup at the wheel of these models and how secure the wheel bearing and stub axle would be if you split the CV and removed the half-shaft. Perhaps one of the guys that's familiar with the unit could elaborate.

You need to replace the shaft, other wise the bearings/wheel falls off, been there, done that

It thought I would ask here in any way to make sure I didn’t do something wrong.
Broke the right front inner cv – going up a very rocky incline
Took the shaft out and drove home – about 40 km’s
In the end had to tow it to Toyota
Fixing the broken cv – about 3 K
Damage done by me driving it without the shaft – extra 20 K
New wheel bearing
New hub
New brake disc
New brake calliper
Destroyed the rim
And and and …
Very very expensive lesson !!
