Roof Lining Removal

Post by JohanM »

Does anybody know how to remove the complete interior roof lining of a 1989 Hilux??? I want to remove mine and fit some insulation to the cab but don't want to dmage it by removing it, as I heard it is very scarce to find it again or you have to pay Mega Bucks to have one ordered from Japan....

Easy to take out, it is lightly glued around the edges. It is re-usable, and if you do manage to tear it any interior trim shop will make you a new one for a few bucks. No need to import it from Japan.

Johan, as has been said there is no particular trick to it. I replaced Shorty's roof lining with a local one as the old one was getting shabby. Better class one with little pin-prick holes in and the cost was about R450 at the time - three years ago.

Thanks for the reply, as I will be doing a lot off new modifications to my Lux during the weekends over November and December, and getting the cab quiet and rattle free is one of the first one's.....

This is something I've wanted to replace in my lux for quite some time now(present one has been abused), at least I now know I can have one locally made and fitted! :)

Thx B

Bretton,

I am also going to try and do some sound and heat insulation on the roof side. When I do that I will be making a special roof Console for My Hilux....This will only happen in December though.......... :?

Eric

Does one buy the lining complete and readily cut or do you buy a big piece and cut it?

Where do I buy it?

Johan I also plan to do a roof console for my Lux sometime in the future (I have a lot to finish first... ) There is a nice thread on the Cruiser forum on a prefab one for the FJ 60, but I doubt if it will fit in the lux.

Roof console for the Hilux is easy, I built one once from 9mm and 3mm ply and it looked and worked well. Had my 29mHz and 27 Mhz in there. It was mounted on steel brackets (front and rear) that used the same screws as the rearview mirror in the front and the interior cabin light in the middle. I covered it with the same brown vinyl as the rest of the interior of the Hilux. 8) 8)

After a while I got gatvol of radio microphone wires dangling all over the place so I ripped it out. When I took it out I refitted the rearview mirror and interior light to their original mounts, and no evidence was left of there ever being a roof console.

That's exactly what the Cruiser uses for mounting brackets. There is also another set of mounting holes halfway between the mirror and the light on the Cruiser. Does anyone know if the Hilux has this as well?

The latest thread on the Cruiser forum has a guy who fitted his 29mhz, a light,a map reading light for the passenger, inverter with plug for a laptop and a very big storage console in it. Looks very good!

Hi Simon,

I had a local car upholsterer redo the floor covering, the seats, the door panels and the roof lining. Took about three days for everything.
