3.0 D4D Engine whining noise

Hi Guys,

My 2014 3.0 D4D with 110k km started to whine when I rev op to 2000, it's a bit higher pitch than the normal revs, and is quite sensitive when pressing/releasing the accelerator. Can only be heard on low revs, but picks up to a faint high pitch as the normal revs of the engine picks up.
This happens when vehicle is still or running, so not on the drive train.
I checked the turbo as well, but the sound seems to come from the front of the engine, almost as if it's a idler pulley bearing, alternator or viscous fan. Belt seems fine.
No difference when lights are on, so probably not the alternator, and no difference when turning the steering, so probably not power steering.
It seems to be worse when it's colder, on first start.

Has anybody experienced something like this, or problems with the pulley bearings?
Thanks.

C

Ten rand on the alternator bearing

My guess would be that you are on the money when you suggest idler pulley bearing. It may feel OK but doesn't mean that it is. Sometimes these sealed bearings start to run "dry" as the grease inside hardens with age and heat. You could try getting some W40 to seep in there and see if it makes a difference - if it does then of course you would have your answer but it would only be a very short term cure and the bearing would need replacement.

The d4d engines I also see the same bearings going first
On the manuals the clutch idler bearing going noisy
Noisy bearing in the front almost guarenteed that it's the alternator bearing.

As for the replacement my clutch idler bearing started to make a noise at 100 000km. I always said I'll leave it until I replace the clutch. I'm now on 200 000km and it's still going

Update....
Turbo that was the culprit. Veins broke and damaged other ones aswell. Removed and took to replace the core. Put it back, and now seems the boost is less. Does not have that sudden pull after 2000 rpm. Revs goes up steady but I am failing to get pas 120km/h in 4th or 5th. Can turbo with new core be the reason, does it need to be run in, or is it most probably a vacuum leak? Cant hear any strange noise, but did notice oil on pipe from intercooler to turbo on clamp?

No there should not be a run-in period for the turbo. Did you check that the movable vanes are loose and is the actuator working?

Thanks for the update. Always good to find out what the issue turned out to be.

With the Tech stream software you can modulate the turbo actuator to check if it’s working

Did you by any chance get any error codes? I had a similar whine for a while, Toyota said it was normal. Drove to bredasdorp last night and van went into limp, not the most fun thing to happen at 2am on the highway.

Managed to get back home, techstream is giving me p0045. Turbo charger open circuit.

Where did you take your turbo to be redone? Price? Image Link Broken

No error codes. Ran diagnostics today. Indicated 0.5 bar boost pressure. Taking it back tomorrow to check the stepper motor. Turbo repair cost was about 7k excl. r&r.

Thanks, spoke to mechanic, said mine is most likely the stepper motor that needs replacing.

Update 2....
Back after 3 days. Replaced stepper motor, checked pipes, cleaned ERG valve but still no boost. Rebuilt turbo with another housing, stepper and variable vanes from 3 different turbos. Removed and replaced 3 times. Boost is back and running well. No problems in original re-done booster, just almost as if the new core was not functioning/boosting correct with the housing. Question now is how long is it going to last?

Next time you hear the whining, gag the wife ... whining should stop. Should last for a while. :D:

The tolerances for the clearance between the vanes and the housing is critical. If it is too much the turbo won't boost as it should. If a turbo is rebuilt properly it should last.
