Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
Thanks to great organisation and years of hard work and meticulous planning by Suidwes aka Jaco, I'm glad to report that we've had a GREAT day's playing. One thing I've learned is that this crowd is punctual! We were going to meet up at Parys from WHERE we were to leave at about 8:30. Well thanks to all the moms and kidz who got up so early, we left at 8:35 for the track where some steaming hot coffee was waiting - or so we were promised...
Afer the formalities were completed the convoy of 6 vehicles, including a new For-tuna idled to the campsite for coffee with saliva running at the mere thought of freshly brewed filter coffee awaiting. Alas that was not to be, as due to power shedding (someone shed the cable) the water was cold.
Back at the reception, 3 members of the Outlaws arrived and boy did they make an entrance. Poor RAMKAT.NW had one look at the monsters being towed on trailers and quickly hid around the corner. It was a real scene from the movie CARS as Andre gave us the low down on the route with the other cars shaking in their boots as the monsters started their big V8's with screaming turbo's and things. Fortuna-tely we didn't see them again.
The route was lovely with everything around us being so green and lush and it all went down without incident until we got to a spruit that looked like it aspired to become the main tributary of the Vaal river. Aldo braved the wet, walked through and confirmed that the water crossing is safe. By this time Ouma and Oupa got over the initial shock (they were under the impression that we were going art viewing in Parys heha  ) and also started enjoying themselves.
Only one recoevery was needed in our group when it was proven that racing slicks are not the best option to play in black cotton mud. The Isuzu tried but was found too light and it was up to a Hilux to do the job.
Lunch break was under a huge tree with a proper concrete braai facility. Everyone, but moi, took one look at the weather and yanked out a cold meal, from quiche to last night's leftover steaks appeared. I insisted in making a fire to braai wors as planned, but that idea soon rained out.
After lunch the group split up with only 4 vehicles going on towards the mountain in pouring rain, which we were warned against. At the first obstacle Aldo had to recover a car from another group which was about to start flying down the mountain. As a reward, the owner reversed Aldo's truck over a rock, breaking off a mud flap. Goes to show that no good deed goes unpunished.
While that was playing off, in another drama the last of the 4 cars somehow got out of drive and ran downhill, causing the rest to bunch up to get out of harms way, while it was still pouring with rain. The little group decided that the prudent option was to turn around and take the chicken run back to camp.
All in all a very very big memorable enjoyable day was had by all with no major damages. And best of all it left us with a little taste to come back for the mountain.
Lots of photos were taken and anyone who want some of mine can mail me at andre.rentals@gmail.com, please also send me your photos?
THANKS TO ALL FROM RAMPIE, KATRYN, OUMA & OUPA!

Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
We were actually 4 cars (8 members).....
But agree.....lovely day.....mud and rain was a big plus....
We did the whole trail....only finished at 15:30. Braaied in the rain....meat does not melt...
PS: It is not monsters.....it is a Super truck....
And no need to be scared of them....it is a car just like all the rest.....
Pity that Rhino challenge wsa closed....would have loved to try.
Also condition was not ideal for production vehicles-our production driver has a few tense moments.

Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
Yes it was great. Thanks to everyone who joined, excellent turnout - think 12 vehicles
Rampie covered day 1 but myself, Aldo, Paul and David decided to tackle the mountain this morning and boy did we have fun. The track up the mountain was much more challenging than the steep descends. We had to rebuild some roads and guide vehicles – Big thanks to Aldo and the guys for all the help. I’ll post some pics tomorrow.
For the all the campers, thanks for a lekker kuier and good laughs – Looking forward to Rust de Winter

Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
The Isuzu tried but was found too light and it was up to a Hilux to do the job.
Julle gaan my definitief weer sien. Hoe gouer hoe beter.
Ek sal in my volgende post 'n paar fodies plaas.

Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
Hier is nog so paar fotos van Saterdag se roete.
Rocky mountain
Steep down
The recovery

Particularly enjoyed watching the Nissans battling to get around the tree on the Sunday mountain climb
Glad to see Jaco is straight into the action up there, another "Great WC Export"

Re: Barakah - 27 Feb 2009
Thanks for the pics Jacques.. My wife is disgusted that I could get my car that dirty even before the trail began ...
That tree was interesting, but I packed a few stones in the rut on my way down to fetch my van, and drove through there very easy compared to the others. My son had the camera when I went through and the angle is different. It does not even look like the same obstacle the way I went through there as I just drove it.
I was lucky being last (well kinda) normally the last guy gets the snot end of the mud that makes it the worst, but on Sunday I was able to watch the others, check the lines and pack enough rocks in the right places to make my run easy. Watching the video, it looks like I just drove through all of them where all the others struggled. I think Jaco up front had the worst time "trail blazing" and falling into all the holes. The first obstacle claimed a Pajero the previous day that nearly fell over and Aldo had to recover him.
Another interesting thing about Sunday was that we drove the trail backwards to the picnic spot to get there as fast as possible. I have driven Berakah 3 times now, and backwards is like a whole new challenge. I think we need to speak to them and see if we can do the top section backward sometime, just that mineshaft will be a problem to get up. Double lockers should get you up, but for us normal guys with no lockers, it will probably be impossible.

Hi There
Pleasure.
Doing the route in reverse? Sounds interesting! When are we going?
There was a few obsticles I thought would be interesting going up instead of down
The first for me now is Rhino next weekend then Rust de Winter.

Oh well, soos ek vir befreesani se = Daar's altyd 'n volgende keer.
