Lekker Bretton, only the two? Did some not make it? The smallest litter I've had from our dogs was 5 pups. (We're expecting another litter in the next 2 weeks  )

We were expecting 3... but the little lady is so small herself, 2 was probably all she can handle!

She's doing a fine mom job, those 2 are getting spoilt rotten!

The vet checked mom and pups this evening... all doing 100%!

If you don't have them inside, make sure that they're out of a breeze and that they're kept warm .... they cannot control their own body temperatures for the first 8 to 10 days. The two most common causes for expiry of pups are cold and asphyxia. Mom may draw them in so close that she starts to lie on them, and they're too weak to be able to breathe if there is pressure on their chests. I usually put a heater in the welping box so that they don't draw up too close to each other.

Rearing pups can be very rewarding not to mention entertaining as they start to develope their own little characters. Good luck! :D:

The first time we had a litter, they were inside .... once was enough!
ABCD0003.JPG
ABCD0003.JPG (42.34 KiB) Viewed 2275 times

They seem to always give birth at night, and I have been in attendance throughout the night with evey delivery. As the pups are born, I cut their cords, clean them up, dry them off and get them to 'latch on' straight away while keeeping them warm. The little wrinkled faces are too cute.
IM004098.JPG

But they get bigger, cuter and more mischievious ....
IM004130.JPG

... and even bigger still!

She's still a young mom and has a lot to learn before she can match the previous (now spayed) mom. But I've sat through and assisited with every delivery they've had ..... if you don't you can loose half the litter before you start. Although all are healthy, we're still not out of danger yet .... the moms tend to tuck them in too closely (sometimes underneath them) and at times end up smothering them ... :problem: Once we're passed the next 10 days I'll breathe easier. They're only between 500 and 600 grams now, by then they'll be more than twice that size and about 1.2 to 1.4 kg. Then she won't lie on them without realizing it. :D:

It's not uncommon to loose pups due to the mother unintentionally smothering them, and sadly we lost two in the first two days, but the remaining 5 are all doing well. They were already between 1kg and 1.1kg on Sunday (one week old) when this pic was taken.
IM00438A.JPG

They should start opening their little eyes in the next 2 or 3 days, and I doubt that any more will be lost now.

It will be 8 weeks tomorrow since they were born, and although they've been a handfull, they've been a pleasure and very entertaining. All five are healthy and done well, topping the scales at a fraction under 7.5kg. Time to let them go to new homes. :(

Really cute, Andy! Looks like #5 has already moved on to pastures anew - I only see four pups now. Are you going to keep any opf them?

There are still five Eric (well for now at least, two were sold today but will only be collected tomorrow). If you look at the "Puppy Pack" pic you will see all five, and in the "even more boring" pic the fifth one is lying further back. I cannot keep any .... got three adults as it is! .... (would love to keep them all as long as they remained pups  ).
