I don't know. Am taking the car back to the leaf spring guys to check. Will take comments back from this forum for some fault finding with the mechanic.

If it is the pinion, woudn't it be more of a whining, metallic or grinding type noise?

I have disconnected the cable and the sound was gone so the noise is definitely coming from the cable. Funny though, after I refitted it the chi chi sound was gone. There is still a very light crackling sound so perhaps it is a matter of time before it fails.
