Re: what should i look for when buying my first hilux?

Hi Chris
Take a look at my hilux. I am reluctantly selling it. It is a very reliable vehicle and it is "trip-ready".

New auxillary fuel tank for 89 SFA

I am about to have a new aux fuel tank made and thought I might bounce it off you all... It is a s/steel box that fits in the bak (canopy on) between the wheel arches (to the same height) and it is only 300mm deep, giving 55l. It will be drained straight into the main tank when it this is empty (sam...

Re: Garden Route

Check out www.4x4ineden.co.za for info on trails in the garden route. I recommend Louvain in the mountains between George and Avontuur (probably 1.5hrs from pine lake marina - a good day outing). Also Vleesbaai dunes past Mossel Bay for good sand dune driving (probably 1hr from PLM). Close to sedgef...

Nearly lost my hilux down a hill!

Yesterday I got the biggest fright of my life  .....I was working in the bush with my lux and an excavator, doing some soil testing. I was driving in low range 1st though thick bush on a steeply sloped site. I parked my lux at a test position, parallel with the contour line, and took it out o...

My wife was peering over my shoulder this evening when I was on the forum reading an article about Weber carbs and she asked me "why are these okes fitting Weber braais onto their bakkies?"    I said it helps improve aerodynamics because fitting a regular braai can...

Re: Lesotho - any advice

I've just done a trip into Lesotho and can offer the following info which may help you: I went in a 2.2l petrol SFA and my average speed over 1000km was 30km/hr. Tar roads are great but steep and you have to go slow or you will cook your brakes on the down hill. Dirt roads are pretty shocking (slow)...

Anybody know what the maximum load rating is for a Front-Runner S2000 roofrack? I have checked out their website but the only products they have there are the wind-cheetah slimline which is not the same as mine.

Ok, thanks for very useful advice Eric....I was ill advised on the size of the cabling from my battery (I was given 2.5mm2). Looks like this thread could go on for infinity. I dont think you can compare rally cars with our hiluxes  Safe to say if 4H feels safer-use it. If you dont like the lower performance - dont.

Re: 4H on gravel roads

If you have ever done any high speed gravel driving you will know that the added traction that you get in 4H is useful to prevent the arse of the vehicle from spinning out. You can quite comfortably do 100km/h in 4H on gravel. There is a slight loss of power accelerating in 4H as opposed to 2H but t...

Over the past year and a half I have kept a fuel log and the average over that period for my 89 DC with standard carb is 7.1km/l. If you only get 7.9 with EFI is it worth it? Probably for performance more than fuel savings

New bucket seats for 89 DC

I have just put some second hand Camry seats into by 89 DC. Got them for R750 from a scrap dealer and fitted them with a few modifications. Had to drill three new holes and insert a braket on one side. Took me just over a day to complete. The new seats are finished off nicely with some Stingray seat...

Re: Please give tyre recommendations

I went for BF Goodrich All-Terrains and they are now at 40000kms and probably just over half way through the tread. They are not nearly as noisy on tar as the Mud-Terrains.which you only really need for mud. They are about R1300 each and Tiger wheel & tyre do insurance for an extra R100 per tyre...
