Re: 1987 Hilux Heater Motor Problems

Found the fuse, but no power to the holder. Seems my whole heater blower circuit has no power, I have no idea where it gets its power from. I don't think it would be a direct draw through the ignition. Perhaps the relay gets its power from the IGN. I have seen the lower speeds issue, and that is a r...

1987 Hilux Heater Motor Problems

Hello again, Another day, another problem with the old girl. For once it's inside the cab, not the engine bay (how exciting :frustrated: ). My heater blower circuit seems to have no power. Nothing at the fuse or switch. The ignition seems to have power (although I don't know which wire is for the he...

Re: Engine swap possibilities? YN57R 3Y petrol

Hi Louis,

I have the new type, magnetic pickup. I haven't been able to find a coil on my truck. I was actually wondering how they work? I'm assuming the distributor produces the spark, as it's only got 4 leads out, not the usual 1 in 4 out. My knowledge lies mostly with older diesel engines.

Thanks

Engine swap possibilities? YN57R 3Y petrol

Hello friends, I have a YN57R, I believe you call these Bakkies over in SA, but mine is the 2wd model (terrible I know, I'd love a 4wd chassis to put my body on). I am having never-ending problems with my carbureted 3Y engine.. New leads, spark plugs, distributor rotor and cap. Carburetor cleaned ou...

Re: New Wheel recommendations needed!

I had 15x8 rims and 33 inch Maxxis buckshot mud tyres on my LN106. The hub and axle spacing is pretty much identical to the N65, but that was with a 6 inch suspension lift :D: :D: :dance1:

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

*Quick update* After reading Muddogs comment about the solenoid relay playing up I decided to do more digging.. Turns out that little box was only sending out voltage when it was cold .. Or something.....  Anyway, I hardwired the anti-dieseling solenoid (the one on the rear of the car...

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

I've found via my multimeter that the solenoid with the pin has power all the time. seems to be working okay on a bench test. A weber carburetor or an EFI setup is looking more & more tempting. I can get a 3Y-E motor complete running from a surf with the EFI computer. I'm not sure how the fuel pump'...

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

Looks like I might be trying that Chinese carburetor business out after all. I thought I'd located the idle issue by regrounding the carb for the (idle?) solenoid. It seemed to make a difference, now it's back to its same old tricks. Maybe the idle solenoids burnt out? I'll pop the solenoid out tomo...

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

Thanks Muddog, it's been quite a mission. New plugs, leads, rotor and cap. Reconditioned carb, intake gasket gooed up with RTV, new voltage regulator and battery. She should be good for another 100,000 clicks. Has a bit of a tap to her in the top end but I'm pretty confident the 3Ys are bulletproof....

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

Quick update; I got it running a lot better! I added an earth wire from the base of the carburetor to the head itself and she no longer dies when at idle under load (braking, with the lights on at night). I figured that the bolts through the manifold would be enough, but apparently not. May have som...

Re: 1986 Hilux D/C 4x4 4y

It runs great under load, it's just an idle problem. Doesn't detonate or anything under load, if anything it feels a bit retarded (backfiring down hills) I might try resetting the timing with a light to 9 btdc and seeing how it drives.

Re: Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

Thanks for the replies guys, very helpful! That emissions control diagram is doing my head in! My truck's missing a lot of that stuff. It appears the the 4Y carb has a few more vacuum ports than the 3Y IIRC the 3Y used the same carb as the 4Y, just differently jetted. Same vacuum diagram should appl...

Re: 1986 Hilux D/C 4x4 4y

@mud dog, I've set my timing on the road, set her to detonate then back a few degrees. When I put the timing light on it she's running about 30 BTDC, surely you'd expect it to detonate if that was the case? I was thinking maybe my harmonic balancer has slipped over the years? I'm going to do some di...

Chinese carburetors? Yet another 3Y thread

Hi. Just wondering if many people have had success with a Chinese carburetor? Specifically for a 3Y petrol engine. I'm also having difficulties with my vacuum lines on the carburetor on my 3Y. All my altitude compensation, and emissions control has been removed over the years, now all I have is two ...

Sounds a bit like a broken rocker arm, I'd take the rocker cover off and go from there.

Hi GTO, just out of curiosity do you know how they sealed up the butterfly shaft? Drill it out, press in a new brass sleeve?
I have a 3Y petrol acting up in a similar fashion. Thanks

Re: 1986 Hilux D/C 4x4 4y

Hi Paul, I'm new too I have a 3Y powered hilux that I'm currently having problems with, but polar opposite to yours. Mine idle's like a bag, dies when coming down from power but runs great on power. Does it pick it's revs up eventually or won't even leave the driveway? Something tells me it's starvi...

Yet another new member..

Hello! Just following the instructions on the email and introducing myself  My names Jez, I'm 22, and I drive a YN57R 2wd 1987 Toyota Hilux. I've had a few Toyotas over the few years. My obsession (haha) started with an old YN106. Great offroad machine! Nice and light in the front, did noti...
