Did you unplug the plug at the tank like Dirka said in his post?
Unplug the plug and see if it goes to E

Disconnect the 5-pin pump and guage connector at the tank.
Switch on the ignition.
Fuel guage must show E..for empty..as in nothing..all the way down.

Best is to remove the radiator, just make everything so much easier. The spanner on bolt and swing engine trick works great, but I prefer an impact wrench. If you wanna do the spanner trick I will still remove the radiator because if the spanner flies the wrong direction you will be minus a radiator...
